Aeronautics and Astronautics

of Engineering Sciences
(SES), to start on 1 October 2008.


The
backgrounds of these
project
s are

related to airframe noise

and aerodynamics
. We aim to
better understand
the
aerodynamic
s and aero
-
acoustics of
large civil aircraft.
The project
s can

be either experimental and/or computational, depending on the background and qualific
a-
tion of the student.
The successful applicant will have

opportunities to
use/
develop

a
d-
vanced predictive

methods
and/or flow and noise control techniques and methodologi
es, e.g.
plasma actuation, feedback control, etc. Possible areas of research include:


Plasma actuator design for flow and noise control: This project studies the changes that pla
s-
ma actuators introduce to a
canonical

turbulent boundary layer
.
The nature
of the project is

experi
mental and the main purpose is

to veri
fy
computational results for suppressing wall
turbu
lence and to change surface shear stress

through plasma actuations
.

Background in
electrical system design and physics will be an advantage.


Numerical model of plasma
and fluid flow:
T
he

numerical

work will

combin
e

fluid
flow
and
plasm
a

modelling.
The nature of the project is computational and
the

main purpose is to
build a multidisciplinary model, through which to

study flow control by

plasma
actuators.
Background in computational modelling and physics will be an advantage.


R
educed order model develop
ment

for f
low control
:
T
he project will

firstly build a
control
model
for high lift device noise

by
POD (
Proper Orthogonal Decomposition)
or si
milar tec
h-
niques. Based
on the
control model,
feedback
contro
l methods will be studied and a sui
t
able
one will be presented
to attenuate
aircraft
noise
. The nature of the project is analytic and co
n-
trol oriented.

ol will be an a

vantage.

will work with a group of highly motivated, first class research students
in the areas of

computational aeroacoustcis,
engine noise

and airframe noise

mathematics,

physics,

autics or engineering discipline. The student
