1. Introduction

Computer Networks Research Laboratory (NETLAB) is established in 1991 as a research
laboratory within the Department of Comp
uter Engineering, Boğaziçi University, with the
purpose of conducting research and development in high speed computer communications,
computer networks, operating systems, distributed systems and parallel computing systems.

In addition to several project
s that are being carried out at NETLAB,
ASMA (Advanced
System for Multicomputer Applications) Project
has been started in 1998 by using the
existing facilities of NETLAB and funding from the
Boğaziçi University Research Fund.
ASMA project aims the developm
ent of a Beowulf PC cluster. Beowulf clusters are cost
effective parallel computer systems built with off
-
the
-
shelf processor/memory boxes and
networking equipment. Initially, a prototype cluster system has been built with the following
specifications.

added to the cluster and additional funding has been obtained from TÜBİTAK
-
EEEAG to
expand the system by additi
onal 24 nodes. TÜBİTAK
-
EEEAG has granted a fund of
approximately USD 19,000 to expand the system by higher speed processors (Pentium II
-
400MHz with 128M RAM, 6GB disk) and 100Mbps switched Ethernet interconnection
network. During 2000,
Boğaziçi University
Research Fund

granted approximately USD 4,000
to support the system with a UPS facility for 7day/24hour operation and air
-
conditioning.
Additional funds are about to be requested to further expand the system by adding more nodes
and larger memory (256MB RA
M/node instead of 128MB).

2. Current Status

Although the experience gained by building an ATM based cluster is quite positive due to the
high speed, low delay, nonblocking properties of the ATM interconnection, the per node
ATM interconnection cost is
quite high. Some labs outside Turkey, that is those that can
afford higher per node interconnection costs, normally use Myrinet interconnections at a cost
similar to ATM costs, but with better speed and lower delay. Since it was more cost effective
in term
s of per node interconnection, it has been decided to expand the initial prototype
system by using a 100Mbps switched Ethernet interconnection network.

The current system consists of two subsystems, a development system on which software
development, netw
ork management and performance measurement work could continue, and
a production system on which MPI applications from other disciplines could be run on
7day/24hour basis. The production system is expected to support Sun Solaris and Microsoft
NT/Windows 20
00 operating systems in near future, to be able to use better professional
software development tools.

The current technical
specifications of
ASMA are listed
below. An interconnection diagram
