Dear Parents and Guardians,

Your son or daughter would like to check out one of the Hillview Library’s

Eighth
Grade Only

eReaders.
We’re excited to offer a library collection for our more mature readers!
Here are some
answers to what we think you might be wondering.

Why another eReader?

Backlit screens like the one on the iPad can lead to eyestrain; the Kindle has a screen
that is easier on the eyes.

The iPads DO have a free Kindle app, but the library can’t provide a
book to each
student.

This system gives students and parents more control over which books to access.

Loaning out the books through eReaders helps us limit the distribution to eighth
graders who have parental permission.

How does it work?

Each eReader cont
ains about ten books on a given genre (Science Fiction, Adventure,
Romance etc.).

Most of t
hese are books that library review journals recommend for
eighth or ninth grade and up
, with a few books for adults, especially on the
Non
-
F
iction Kindle.

Parents a
nd students sign the attached Technology Agreement form, which also
confers permission to access the Eighth Grade Only collection.

You can read these same reviews at www.titlewave.com. Username and password are
both hvschool. Click the “Saved lists” for a
pull
-
down menu
showing what’s on each
eReader.

Many of the books are also reviewed on the Common Sense Media website
(www.commonsensemedia.org) which gives
detailed
age ratings to books and
movies.

Students go to the Hillview library to check out a partic
ular Kindle for two weeks at a
time. Kindles can be renewed if no one else
is waiting
.

Can’t we
already
get eBooks on our iPads?

Yes!
All
students have access to about 25
0 eBooks through our Dest
iny Library
Management System.
Currently, those eBooks can be

accessed on iPads and Android
tablets,

and with limited functionality on the Kindle Fire,

but not on Kindles or
Nooks.

Dow
n
load the Follett Digital Reader App.

(It’s already on the student iPads.)

Our
library address is https://wbb20529.follettshelf.co
m and students use their Hillview
log
-
in information to download the books onto their devices.

Full directions can be found on the library website: blog.mpcsd.org/tpiombo (no
www).

Please contact us

with any quest
ions or concerns you may have.

We’re exci
ted to be
dipping our toes into the eReader waters, and very grateful to the support of the MPAEF, the
PTO and the Friends of the Library for making this possible!

Sincerely,

Theresa Fox &
Tracy Piombo

P.S. PTO council wondered if parents could donate eBooks that their families had already re
ad.
After looking into it, we

don’t think this will be manageable at this time. Right no
w we’re very
fortunate to have the funding to support the project.
