The movie Gattaca

deals with the issue o

f use of technology in society. The technology in question
is genetic engineering of new born infants in order to eliminate or modify individual characteristics.
It is believed that genetic engineering can be used to eliminate disea
ses like Alzheimer’s,
Parkinson’s and possibly even cancer. It is also believed that genetic modification could have darker
implications for society including the ostracization of those individuals who are not considered
“perfect.”

You are an editorialist
for the Toronto Star. You have received information that the
Canadian government is planning to table a bill allowing for the use of genetic engineering methods
to identify and correct “potential abnormalities” in newborn infants. Please complete a one
