Modeling of Turbulent Combustion: Current Status and Perspectives

Abstract



Combustion of fossil fuels will continue to be the main energy source in the
foreseeable future. Clean combustion with high efficiency is the ultimate goal being
pursued by scientists and engineer
s worldwide. A modest research

program toward
this goal can have vast impact on world economies, urban atmospheres, and global
warming. Numerical tools have become an essential part of this endeavor in designing
clean combustors.


Most practical combustors

use turbulent flows for promoting
mixing and combustion. The interactions between turbulence and combustion
chemistry play an important role in the designs of clean burners.


A preliminary
background on modeling of turbulent reacting flows is given pointi
ng out the
challenges. Current

concepts of modeling turbulent reacting flows are briefly
reviewed including

flamelet model, conditional moment closure, and the transport
probability

density function approaches. Perspectives of implementation of these
vario
us

models for large
-
eddy simulations are discussed with some recent results.
