Fuel Economy vs. Wear
Because petroleum products remain expensive, more and more consumers desire to maximize
the fuel economy their vehicle can attain in order to minimize their cost of fuel. Even more
concerned about engine fuel economy are automobile OEMs, who face steep fines if they do
not meet fuel economy requirements set by federal governments. Thus these OEMs continue
to design their vehicles with improved fuel efficiency each new year in order to attain better
overall fuel economy for each new fleet of vehicles they produce.
A big part of these engine designs is requiring the engines to run off of low viscosity motor oil.
According to the USA EPA, switching from a high viscosity motor oil to low viscosity motor oil
in a passenger car can save consumers 3-5% a year on fuel economy. As mentioned above,
this is very important to automobile OEMs. Thus, many OEMs now require consumers to use
low viscosity motor oils. For BMW, VW/Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche, this is either an SAE
5W-30 or 5W-40 approved engine oil, like TOP 1 Evolution OEM Series I and Series IV products.

But, some OEMs require viscosities as low as SAE 0W-20, like TOP 1 Evolution 0W-20 Fully
Synthetic Motor Oil, to be used in their automobiles. Examples include the Toyota Camry, the
Lexus RX 350, the Honda Accord and the Honda Insight. If there happens to be an engine
failure, and these OEM mechanics find that the “recommended” viscosity was not used, the
vehicle warranty will be void.
Debates have been raised about whether these engine oil viscosities
are too thin, however, and that lighter viscosity will not prevent metal-
on-metal engine wear. These worries are only valid if an ultra light
viscosity, like a 0W-20, is used in an older vehicle or one that specifies
a heavy motor oil. Despite the very thin nature of new engine oil
technology, high quality base stocks and VI improvers give these
ultra low viscosity synthetic motor oils a high viscosity index to prevent
viscosity breakdown. The advanced additive packages in the low
viscosity synthetic motor oils are formulated with anti-wear agents like
ZDDP to protect the engine against wear.
The march is on towards thinner oils! Though a 0W-20 may not be ideal
for the older automobile engine, as engine design and oil technology
continue to improve, it is possible that most or all cars on the road will
require ultra low viscosities in the not-too-distant future.
Please remember, it is always best to look at your automobile’s OEM
owner’s manual to determine the correct viscosity to use in your engine.
