Caterpillar Introduces C175
16 Diesel Offshore Drilling Generator Set

Houston, TX May 4, 2009

Caterpillar Inc. announces the introduction of the C175
16 diesel drilling
module designed for

offshore applications. The generator set is available worldwide in 60 Hz packages
with a 1.83 MW rating at 1200 rpm. The Cat® C175
16 generator set package was designed to offer a
larger unit rating, higher power density, lower emissions and reduced insta
llation costs for shallow
water and jackup rigs. Meeting U.S. EPA Tier 2 and IMO II requirements, the new generator set
addresses the current needs of the worldwide drilling industry, and will be the new standard for future
offshore drilling rigs.

C175 di
esel generator sets have successfully completed rigorous field reliability demonstrations in real
world applications spanning the globe. It has achieved more than 100,000 hours of proven reliability
across all Cat product lines, with over 60,000 hours in g
enerator set applications. The C175 is
optimized for a variety of applications, including the stringent demands of power generation for
offshore drilling.

"Our customers wanted more power in a similar package" said Darrin Heflin, Engineering Manager for
he C175. "In today's economic climates, customers expect their generator sets to deliver improved
performance and low fuel consumption, while meeting future emissions regulations. Caterpillar's
answer is the C175, designed to provide a reliable, durable, e
asily serviceable generator set in a single
solid package."

Five key engine systems comprise the Cat C175
16: fuel system, electronics and controls, air system,
cooling system and lubrication system. Engineers incorporated significant input from Voice of
Customer (VOC) market research into the design of the systems, allowing Caterpillar to deliver a
class engine to customers seeking solutions capable of meeting marine society requirements.

The C175
16's fuel system utilizes a high pressure fuel pump

and control valve that deliver multiple
precise injections within a single combustion event. This results in lower emissions, improved
performance and reduced fuel consumption. Driven by the ADEM™ A4 controller, the C175

management system featur
es full redundancy and provides superior performance, even in the most
demanding environments.

The high efficiency close coupled generator is designed to match the performance and output
characteristics of the C175 standard package. With industry
g mechanical and electrical design it
offers Class F insulation and an IP23 enclosure. The .7 power factor, form wound generator features
permanent magnet excitation (PMG). Additional generator configurations are also available.

The air system delivers
cooler combustion air at the cross
flow cylinder heads, allowing for higher
power density and emission reduction. A new generation of turbochargers was designed for the C175,
providing a 5 percent efficiency boost and longer life when compared to tradition
al turbochargers. A
newly designed cooling system cools only the parts of the engine that require cooling, resulting in
increased efficiency and lower heat rejection. This method of temperature control allows customers to
reduce overall installation costs
by using smaller radiators or heat exchangers, as well as smaller engine
room ventilation ducting and fans.

The lubrication system utilizes Cat® Advanced High Efficiency Oil Filters which provide a higher level
of filtration efficiency while maintaining C
aterpillar's superior capacity. By enhancing the lubrication
system, the recommended oil change interval has been optimized to 1000 hours. It may be possible to
extend even further with the use of Cat
. This will result in reduced maintenan
expenditures and downtime.

The company offers worldwide product support, with parts and service available globally through the
Cat service and dealer network. In addition, dealer service technicians are trained to service every
aspect of Cat equipment.
