Using RRBDIN GIS Web Services
in ArcMap

The RRBDIN Flood Forecast viewer makes use of several GIS web mapping services in the development
of the application. These mapping services are also available for consumption through ArcMap. To use
these services

in ArcMap, use the following instructions:

1)

Start ArcCatalog by selecting the Start Menu > All Programs > ArcGIS > ArcCatalog.

2)

From the “catalog tree” on the left
-
hand side of the main window, expand the node that says
“GIS Servers.”

3)

Double
-
clicking
the item that says “Add ArcGIS Server” should produce the following dialog:

4)

Select “Use GIS Services” and then click the button that says “Next >.”

5)

Enter “
http://gis.rrbdin.org/arcgis/rest
” in the textbox next to the “Server URL” label in the next
scre
en. See below.

6)

Click the button that says “Finish.” The add access to the GIS services hosted by RRBDIN.

Be
sure to leave the “User Name” and “Password” fields empty.

7)

Start ArcMap by selecting Start Menu > All Programs > ArcGIS > ArcMap.

8)

Select t
he “Blank Map” template from the initial window.

9)

Once you are in ArcMap, you can optionally add a basemap to the document.

Adding a
basemap provides geospatial context for the content you are viewing. For example, you can use
Esri’s Topographic basemap

by selecting “Add Basemap” from the “Add Data” drop
-
down menu.

10)

Once you have added a basemap, you can now use the usual ArcMap pan and zoom tools to
navigate across the map. Zoom in to the Fargo
-
Moorhead area on the map.

11)

Now click the “Add Data” button

from the main toolbar. From the main drop
-
down in the
navigation window, select “GIS Servers” from the list of options. We are going to look in the GIS
Server connection that we just created.

12)

Double
-
click on the connection labeled “arcgis on g
is.rrbdin.org (user)”.

13)

Double
-
click on the folder labeled “FloodForecast.”

You can add any of the map services used in the web applications by selecting the service here. For
