Electrolytic Capacitors


For most electronic power supplies, one life
limiting component is the electrolytic capacitor.


These components have a predictable wear out
mechanism


the evaporation of the electrolyte.

In addition to ambient temperature, there are many other
factors affecting the life of the electrolytic capacitors. It
is important to:


Choose components carefully.


Utilize quality suppliers.


Derate capacitors appropriately.


Manage the ripple current and component temperature.

Failure rates of LED drivers are dominated by the
semiconductor devices which includes the main
MOSFETs, diodes, control ICs, and opto
-
coupler.


The electrolytic capacitors contribute only a small
portion of the driver failure rate.


The failure rates of semiconductor devices are
largely dependent on the operating temperature.


Typically the failure rate of an LED driver is
increased by 25
-
40% for every 10C increase in the
case temperature (and internal components).
