Knowledge Communication in
the Building Industry

Knowledge communication is the one of the most
important processes in the building industry.

An engineer must be able to take his ideas and
convey them to others.

Knowledge communication can be compared to
practice of showing, instructing, or teaching.

In some cases, knowledge can be attained through
example. In others cases, especially when working in a
larger scale, technology can effectively express an idea.

We will take a look at some of the many ways that
knowledge is shared and exchanged in the building
industry.

Introduction

The first step in starting a project is
formatting an idea.

An idea that is created by an individual needs to
be shared in order for it to grow. Once an idea is
fully developed, it can be put into use or
production.

Engineers use tools such as graphics and 3D
models so that their knowledge can be shared and
understood.

What is Knowledge Communication?

The (deliberate) activity of interactively
conveying and co
-
constructing insights,
assessments, experiences, or skills through
verbal and non
-
verbal means.

The exchange of know
-
how, know
-
why,
know
-
what, and know
-
who through face
-
to
-
face or media
-
based interaction.

Advantages

A company that uses knowledge
communication effectively can work faster
and more efficiently.

Time is not wasted explaining what must be done
and output is increased.

Knowledge can be shared in order to benefit
the industry in a way that is cost efficient.

Disadvantages

Knowledge is lost through
miscommunication or when it is simply not
shared.

It is important to prevent the loss of
knowledge by using knowledge
communication.

Why is Knowledge
Communication important?

Knowledge communication is very important
in the building industry because of the
complexity and detail of most projects.

If certain design features are overlooked or left to
chance, a lot of money could be wasted on costly
repairs.

Design experts and engineers must
coordinate their decisions in order to make
structurally sound, yet economical structures.

How does Knowledge
Communication help?

Knowledge communication is used to quickly and
easily aid the design and construction process.

During development and construction, contractors may
encounter any number of problems. If one of these
problems stops production, money is being lost.

These problems are almost always a result of a lack of
communication.

Contractors hire decision makers and managers
whose jobs it is to make sure that construction
moves along smoothly and efficiently. These workers
must convey knowledge from the field to the
mangers through knowledge communication.

What is Knowledge
Visualization?

Knowledge visualization is the use of graphics
to convey complex insights.

These methods can also be used to show
large amounts of information in a simple
manner.

Managers can look at a graph of his or her budget
expenses to get a look at the big picture.

Example

Instead of reading a list of data, it is much easier to look at the graph
and see where each city stands in its water consumption.

What is Knowledge
Management?

Knowledge management is a method used by
the building industry to increase productivity.

Knowledge can be used and reused by
contractors and engineers to improve the
speed and quality of construction.

What is in the future?

The progression of knowledge
communication is growing at an accelerated
rate.

The building industry relies on technology to
make knowledge communication easier.

The future is bright for knowledge
communication because it will continue to
grow as technology advances.
