Sequencing this unit:

The sequencing of this unit can go a bunch of ways. I am choosing to start with GATTACA this year,
and the discussion of genetic ethics, as this first week is so odd with the late starts. This allows the pGLO
Lab to
fall

on a lab day for me. However, I hav
e frequently started this unit with all the lab work, and then
ended with GATTACA


it can be a nice way to wind down the week before spring break. Totally
depends on what works with your schedule

and the labs. Let me know what you decide and I am happy to

forward materials on to share (notes, article I use, etc) if we end up starting in different places.

However, preparation for the pGLO Lab does require teaching restriction enzymes and genetic
recombination before doing the pGLO Lab. The pGLO lab itself

could be done in 57 min if the kids start
the second they walk in the door. This would mean having the class before be a prep period, to go over
the advance prep in detail, as well as the procedural notes on the lab (I have done this before and it works
o
k.) I prefer doing pGLO on a lab day, so I don’t feel rushed.

The pGLO Lab is really fun, but can be time intensive to prep (especially the first time running the lab)

include print copies with the kits (you have to print them off
