Nature has drawn solutions to many problems. Nature inspired routing protocols have been becoming the focus of research because they achieve the complex task of routing through simple agents which traverse the network and collect the routing information in an asynchronous fashion. The rapid changing and unpredictable nature of Mobile Ad hoc Networks pose a wide range of challenges for effective routing. In this article we present different routing algorithms for MANETs drawn from the nature, which are developed based on Ant Colonies, and Bee Colonies. The objective of this survey is to provide better understanding of the potentials of Nature-inspired routing protocols which is currently far from being fully recognized, and to motivate the research community to further explore this timely and exciting topic.
