Start Up Nations

Smarter Cities

Dr. Edna Pasher
, Nitzan Faran

During the up and coming

November, a conference and exhibition will take place in
Barcelona under the name
of:
"
Smart Cities World Expo 2013
". The aim of the event is to bring
together in
to

one place
,

represe
ntatives of cities
, academy, research institutes, industry and
entrepreneurs
alongside with decision makers, all o
f which
are
actively
engaged

and committed
to
the development and implementation of smart cities
and

smart projects
. The event which is
being
held for the third time this year
is expected to host thousands of visitors from around the
world.

The
topics,

around which
the event revolve
s,

are
for example
:

sustainability
, innovation
and technology, economics and administration, emergency and safety, urban planning and
mobility, energy, and above all
-

a smart and cooperative city.

We, at Edna Pasher & Associa
tes have been
actively

promoting the concept and practical
knowhow of smart cities for the past 7 years and as such, it is only natural that we will be
actively involved in this event. Our

involvemen
t

is reflected in two ways: first,
Edna

will
give a
lectu
re at the conference about some of
our

leading
international R&D
projects in the E
-
Health
and well
-
being
field
s
.
In a
ddition
,

we have initiated an Israeli delegation comprised of

members
of "The Smart Cities Israel Forum”, which is a group
comprised
of go
vernment officials
, and our
colleagues from
the
academy and
the
industry, which deal with the
topic

of Smart Cities

from
various

angles
. Our delegation has

received
a unique opportunity

to
conduct

a half
-
day workshop
in the simulated town square, under the branding of

Start
u
p Nation

Smarter Cities

.

The workshop will be base
d

upon
yet another
unique project, called “Town
-
Square
Academy”, led by Dr. Ayelet

Shavit and Yael Silver, from Tel
-
Hai Aca
demic College in the
upper Galilee,

Israel,

in which researchers, scholars, students and citizens join forces and get
together to make high quality academic knowledge more accessible and relevant to everyone’s
life, i.e. building together a
sustainable
lea
rning
community.

"
Town Square Academy"
is a

social project
, and its many partners
are

seeking to

restore

the

academy

to the

origins

the

town square

in Athens
,
out of

the walls of the standard

academy,

to the

open

and

critical

spirit that

emerged

from

the

life sciences

and humanities.

The topic of
our

workshop
, “Start
u
p Nations

Smarter Cities”,
is

based on the
assumption that there is an inherent symbiosis between the local and national governance and
one cannot grow without the other. This workshop wi
ll explore these unique dependencies from
various aspects and points of view,
and
present

not only

smart solutions, but smart thinking
,
while inviting the participators of the conference and exhibition to think outside of the box and to
promote and
implement these ideas.

The workshop will be comprised of mini
-
sessions representing various aspects of this
symbiosis and they all will be connected to the general topic of “The potential of ICT for smart
and sustainable
cities”.

The first mini
-
session wi
ll revolve
one of Europe's leading challenges which is

how to
integrate, empower and sustainably engage cognitive & physically impaired and elderly people
in the community, and how to provide them with a better living environment and conditions.

The second mini
-
session will be presented by Prof. Gady Golan who will speak about the
concept of “Smart Grids”: with the example of a "smart green campus", with its own energy
resources, smart metering, central control system, and all in all a self
-
sustai
ned micro
-
grid.

The third mini
-
session will be presented by Arch. Rafi Rich who will question existing
paradigms by thinking “out of the (smart) box" expressing the need to re
-
examine common
knowledge and disciplines in order to promote smarter initiatives
.

The forth mini
-
session will be presented by Maestro Roni

Porat who will present the
concept of “Maestro Management”, as an example in practice of interdisciplinary thinking,
which aspires to bring methods and tools from the musical world into management
.

Projects like “Town Square Academy”, and our future workshop, “Start Up Nation

Smarter Cities”, remind us the issue of engagement for sustainability

because without
engagement, it will be very hard or even impossible to achieve sustainability.

Only
cities that
encourage

creation,

sharing
, evaluation, renewal
and

constant

updating

of
knowledge

by creating

a constant

engagement

of

all generations of
residents

and

residents of

neighboring towns
-

will
prevail
.
