Feasibility Study

Business Problem

Mr Stanley Tonkins is in need of an economical lighting system to reduce costs and
consumption of electricity

in

a particular room in

the IT department of Blacktown College
(Block J)
.

The new lighting system
should:

Be
installed without
major change or

total
replacement of

lighting infrastructure

B
e
come a

major inconvenie
nce to the occupants during use

Can
be centrally managed

using smart grid technology

Have a well managed data system to

record and benchmark the consumption of
electricity used in the ligh
ting system

Be a low cost solution that can f
acilitate savings up to 70%

The bu
dget set for this project is $1

000.

Curre
nt Situation

The room has two rails of lights control
led by normal light switches on the door.

No central control system is installed apart from the main light circuit control in the circuit
breaker box.

No data recording system is in place to record
energy consumption on the lighting system
.

The IT department has old decommissioned computers that are not used.

SIMple IT Solutions solution

A

wireless
lighting co
ntrol system like the Adura Lig
h
t
point System can be utilized for this
project as it:

C
an be installed without major re
-
cabling to be done

Flexible as w
ireless control
lers can just be added into individual or for a group of
lighting ballasts and wall control interfaces to replace existing wall switches

Can be centrally managed from a web app
lication which is password protected to
control the lighting system remotely

Records data on energy consumption used by the lighting system which can be
reviewed and benchmarked.

Is scalable if the client wishes to expand the system further

Additional sens
ors can be installed to automatically detect occupancy and daylight
levels in the room and adjust the lights accordingly

To save cost to the installation, the reuse of an old

computer with a copy of Ubuntu

and
Firefox

installed to utilise the BrowserApp s
oftware.

Schedule

Proposed schedule for this project will take
9

working days
from acquisition of parts to
completion of installation
, with a total of 5 weeks from start of project to closure.

7

Working d
ays to acquire relevant hardware and software

1

Working day to install the system

1

Working

Day

testing of the whole system

Recommendations

Licensed electricians with the correct qualifications should be sub
-
contracted to
professionally install required parts to the lighting infrastructure
.
Budget s
hould be increased
by $5
00 to cover the cost of hiring licensed electricians

and labour

Installation

should commence
on a day when there is no class on or when there is min
imal
classes on to minimise dis
ruptions to students. Alternatively, the system can
be installed in
the
following school summer holiday (20/12/2010

24/01/2011)
.
