The logo

The logo of the XIIIth Congress includes a caravel in allusion to the arrival of the
Spanish colonizers to the River Plate; the Potosi Hill, that stands for the relevance the
silver exploitation in the Alto Peru had for colonial ec
onomy, and a couple of wheat
spikes indicating the importance of the agricultural activities in modern Argentina.

Introduction

The XIIIth Congress of the International Economic History Association (IEHA) will be
held at the Hilton Hotel Buenos Aires, Arg
entina, on 22
-
26 July, 2002. It has been
declared an event of “national interest" through Resolution Nº 390/98 issued by the
Secretary General of the Presidency of the Argentine Nation. The Universidad de San
Andrés is in charge of the organization of the
Congress and has been granted support
by several academic institutions such as the Academia Nacional de la Historia and the
national economic history associations of Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. The
Interamerican Development Bank, the Banco Central de la

República Argentina and the
Banco de la Nación Argentina are among the sponsors of the Congress.

The Executive Committee of the IEHA is responsible for the preparation of the scientific
programme of the Congress, while the Local Organizing Committee is i
n charge of the
logistic coordination and the organization of the event. The Congress is presided over by
the President of the IEHA, while representatives from Brazil and Uruguay have a
position as Vice
-
Presidents.

This brochure contains the final program
me of the XIIIth Congress, corresponding to the
two summons to submittance of proposals for sessions. Those interested in taking part
in any session should directly contact the organizer thereof. Enquiries concerning
scientific aspects of the Congress may
be addressed to Prof. Jan Luiten van Zanden,
Secretary General of the IEHA, or to the Scientific Secretariat of the Congress. Both
addresses appear in the last page herein.

Besides, the following pages contain general information about the organization of

the
Congress, and details on the registration and travel agency. Those willing to attend the
Congress should fill in the registration form attached (also available on the webpage)
and send it to the Local Organizing Committee in Buenos Aires,
before Febru
ary 1 and
no later than June 1, 2002
.

* The cocktail will take place at the premises of the National General Archives at Leandro N. Alem 246. The
building used to be one of the seats of the National Mortgage Bank. Its construction started in 1914 and
finished in 1920. It is a work by

Architect Arturo Prins, and used to be part of the building complex of
Avenida 25 de Mayo and Av. Leandro N. Alem, designed by Architect Carlos Altgelt towards the end of the
XIXth century, and enlarged at the beginning of the XXth century. The moving to
the Archives' present
premises took place during the 1950's.

Participants will also be able to visit the exhibition entitled Memory and Archeology: the Argentine State
-
Owned Companies, showing graphic evidence (plans, photos and mementos, among others) of
the
companies privatized during the 1990's. It consists of an attempt to illustrate the development of the large
public utility companies
-
plants, work places and methods and worker's features
-

through material from the
Photographic Archives and the Interm
ediate Archives. At the latter, a relevant documentary fund has been
recently formed concerning companies once owned by the State, such as SEGBA (electricity), YPF (oil),
ENTEL (telecommunications), OSN (water supply), BANADE (bank), Flota Fluvial (River F
leet), Junta
Nacional de Granos (Cereals National Board), Junta Nacional de Carnes (Meat National Board), and other.
