Computer Architectures and Components

In groups of 2 or 3 research into one of the technologies outlined below and produce a report and
presentation.

1.

Main Memory

should include main memory and graphics memory used in computers.

2.

Processors

(including multi
-
processing & multi
-
core, cache, clocks, architectures (x86 & x64
only) etc)Cache

this should look at caches on chip or maybe off chip for different processors

3.

Busses

(Internal and external, USB, PCI, HTT, FSB, PCI
-
E, SATA, IDE, etc)
a
nd chipsets
.

4.

Graphics processors
(GPU memory, architecture, algorithms etc)

You should look at this from the point of view of a system designer who is going to investigate which are
the best technologies to enable him/her to decide which is the best syste
m to buy
,

with reasons.
In other
words I want to know why one particular aspect (e.g. pipelining, fly
-
by
-
wire), improves performance. You
should also

include a table showing comparisons and make a judgement about the best technology to use. I
only want inf
ormation about recent and emerging technologies. I don’t want basic theory or information
about technologies which are more than 5 or 6 years old.

There should be no more than 3000 words on each topic but may contain as many pictures as you like.
If you
i
nclude work which has been obtained from other sources e.g. books, journals, internet

they must be
referenced using the Harvard scheme.
The report must be submitted electronically through Turnitin.

Each student will prepare a Powerpoint presentation on
one of the above topics. This presentation should
take the form of a lecture where each group is teaching the others about your particular technology. You
may ask questions to test understanding. You will be advised which topic area you will undertake re
a
dy to
pres
ent in week ending 24
th

January 2011.

The
report

MUST be
written in your own words and all work obtained from outside sources must be referenced
.

The module will be assessed by the following:

Marking Criteria

A+

Work is worthy of publication or dissemination as appropriate to the field.

Evidence of originality and independent thinking, as appropriate to the task.

Exceptional in
-
depth knowledge across specialised and applied areas of relevant literature, available
information, and conceptual issues.

The work is very well written and presents an excellent synthesis of appropriate available information,
coherently str
uctured.

Where group work is involved there is evidence of an outstanding individual contribution.

Outstanding evidence of acquisition of relevant skills and their application.

Excellent presentation.

A

Commanding knowledge of relevant literature,
available information, and conceptual issues appropriate to the
field.

Demonstrates the ability to make good judgements, as appropriate to the assessment task.

The work is very well written and presents an excellent synthesis of appropriate available infor
mation,
coherently structured.

Where group work is involved there is evidence of an excellent individual contribution.

Excellent evidence of acquisition of relevant skills and their application.

Excellent presentation.

B

Good knowledge of relevant literatu
re, available information, and conceptual issues appropriate to the field.

The work is well written and presents a good synthesis of appropriate available information, coherently
structured.

Draws valid conclusions.

Where group work is involved there is ev
idence of a productive individual contribution.

Good evidence of acquisition of relevant skills.

Very good presentation.

C

Demonstrates clear but limited attempt to become acquainted with relevant source material and draw relevant
conclusions, but draws co
nclusions that do not all follow logically from the work undertaken.

Work is not fully coherent, poorly structured, and indicates that key concepts are generally not understood.

Little evidence of acquisition of relevant skills.

Where group work is involve
d there is inadequate individual contribution to the relevant task.

Poor presentation.

F

Makes little attempt to become acquainted with relevant source material.

Does not draw conclusions or if does then they consist of unsupported assertions.

Work is not
coherent, very poorly structured, and indicates that key concepts are not understood.

Little or no evidence of the acquisition of key skills.

Where group work is involved there is very poor individual contribution to the relevant task.

Very weak presentati
on.
