Ram vs. Rom

ROM

Read Only Memory

the memory needed to get the computer going and to make it
run properly

It remains even when you turn the computer off

RAM: Random Access Memory

The memory your computer uses while it is working

This enables you to do more things at one time

It makes the computer go faster while you work

Hard drive or storage

The memory for everything on your computer

You can go back to find it; it does not use only what is current
Other

Floppy drives

practically non
-
existent today

External drives

used to extend the storage memory of your computer or
to back up your files
CD and DVD drives

CD s

Yes, like your musical CDs

Can read from them

Can write to them to save music, pictures or data files

Blank CD's (not to be mixed up with blank DVD's) hold
750mb
worth of memory. Which
acounts
to
273 digital
photos and
80
mins
of digital music
.

DVDs

Yup

like the movie DVDs
DVDs

How many pictures will a 700 MB CD hold?

Depends on the size of the Pictures.

A DVD will hold many more pictures and most
computers that can read the pictures from a CD can
also read them from a DVD.

Photographer:

I just did a wedding, lunch, dinner, and dance and I've
got 719 pictures and they total 3.7 GB.

That's 3,700 MB or 6
Cd's
.

I should be able to get all of them on a DVD.

A DVD can hold 4.7 GB of information.
Flash Drive

Portable storage device

small storage device to store data on

save data

Can transfer information between computers

If you plan to use computers, definitely buy one

You may want one for this course

RECOMMEND

Read handout for next class. We will use one then.

Hardware
vs
software

Hardware: what you can touch

Keyboard

Monitor

Mouse

Computer case (CPU)

Electronic circuit boards

drives

Software: Set of instructions or programs that tell the
hardware what to do

Word processing

Speadsheets

Games

Photo editing software

ETC
What is the Operating System?

A form of software installed on the computer that acts as
the interpreter or traffic cop on your computer

Translate computer language into something you
understand

Think of it as setting the rules of the house

What you do and expect

Your rules are not someone else’s house rules

Your rules changed through the years

Kids were 2

Kids were 10

Kids were teenagers

Kids graduated from HS

Kids came home with kids

Operating System

Do you have rules to make your household operate?

Are these rules the same as other people have?

Therefore it is YOU [your name]’s Operating System.

The Operating System of a computer tells the
computer how to work

how to start, what the screen
looks like, how to handle data, etc.
