What is a computer network?

It is a system consisting of a number of computers that
are interconnected by using some kind of a data
communication system.

Principal components of a computer network:
 Computers (processing nodes, or hosts)
 Data communication system
(transmission media,
communication processors,
modems,
routers, bridges,
radio systems,
satellites,
switches,
etc.)
4
Goals of computer networks

1. Resource sharing and accessing them independently
of their location.
2. Providing a universal environment for transmission
of all kinds of information: data, speech, video,
etc.
3. Supporting high reliability of accessing resources.
4. Distribution of loads according to the requirements,
very fast mainframes, minis, PCs, etc.
5. In not-to-distant future: creation of gigantic
network computing environment…

General introduction, pp. 1-16
ARPANET, pp. 47-50
Problems (see pp. 74-76): 1, 2.

Warning:
In quizzes & exams, questions will be asked from the
textbook, even if the corresponding topics are not
covered in lectures…
