: A uniaxial viscoelastoplastic model that can describe whole creep behaviors of aspha

different temperatures was presented. The model was composed of three submodels in series, which
describe elastoplastic, viscoelastic and viscoplastic charac
teristics respectively. The constitutive equation
ondition, and the creep representation was also obtained. The
constitutive parameters were determined by uniaxial compression tests under controlled
-
stress of 0.1 MPa
with five different test temperatures of 20, 40, 45, 50 and 60 degrees C. Expressions of
the model
parameters in terms of temperatures were also given. The model gave prediction at various temperatures
consistent with the experimental results, and can reflect the total deformation characterization of asphalt
sands.

: The first impoundment of the Three Gorges Dam reservoir in China started from a water surface
elevation of 95 m on June 1, 2003 and reached 135 m on June 15, 2003. Shortly after the wa
ter level
reached 135 m, many slopes began to deform and some landsl
ides occurred. The Qianjiangping landslide is
the largest one; it occurred on the early morning of July 14, 2003 and caused great loss of lives and
property. Field investigation revealed t
hat, although failure occurred after the reservoir reached 135 m, the
stability of the slope was already reduced by preexisting sheared bedding planes. To study the mechanism
of the rapid motion of this reactivated landslide, two soil samples were taken fr
om a yellow clay layer and a
black silt layer in the sliding zone, respectively, and a series of ring shear tests were conducted on the
samples. One series of ring shear tests simulates the creep deformation behavior, while the other series
simulates diffe
rent shear rates. Conclusions drawn from analysis of the ring shear tests indicate that the
mechanism of the rapid motion of the reactivated landslide was caused by the rate effect of the black silt
layer during the motion phase after the creep failure. Th
e yellow clay layer did not play any important role
in the rapid motion in the 2003 event.

: Active contour method is a powerful approach for object contour extraction. This paper presents a
new object contour
extraction method, which combines the level set evolution with the support value filter.
It analyzes image under the least squares supp
ort vector machine (LS

SVM) framework and uses the
support values to represent salient features underlying image. The Gau
ssian filter, used in conventional
level set method to compute the edge indicator, is replaced by the support value filter deduced from the
mapped LS
-
SVM. The level set evolution method is implemented on the feature image obtained by
convolving the support

value filter with the original image. Experiments are undertaken on the synthetic
and real images. The experimental results demonstrate that the support value filter can provide a good
estimate for the optimal step size in a gradient descent algorithm and

over the direct level set evolution method in converging speed and contour extraction accuracy. (C) 2008

synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. The structure was determined by single

diffraction and further characterized by elemental analysis, IR,
and TGA. The compound crystallized in an
orthorhombic system, P2(1)2(1)2(1) space group, a = 6.7665(7) angstrom, b = 12.9047(14) angstrom, c =
13.1848(15) angstrom, beta = 90 degrees.
In the compound, each Ni(II) atom exhibits a six
-
coordinated
distorted octahedral geometry. Interestingly, carboxylate group from dcbp ligands bridges between adjacent
Ni(II) atoms giving rise to unprecedented interweaving of hetero
-
chiral single helical c
hains into a 3D
chiral (10, 3) framework.

: Ferroelectric Bi3.25La0.75Ti3O12 (BLT) and Bi3.15Nd0.85Ti3O12 (BNT) thin films were
fabricated on Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si (100) substrates by a modified sol
-
gel technique. X
-
ray diffraction indicated
that these films were of single phase with random polycrysta
lline orientations. The surface morphologies of
the films were observed by scanning electron microscope, showing uniform, dense films with grain size of
50
-
100 nm. Well
-
s
aturated hysteresis loops of the films were obtained in metal
-
ferroelectric
-
metal type
capacitors with Cu top electrodes at an applied voltage of 400 kV/cm, giving the remanent polarization
(2P(r)) and coercive field (2E(c)) values of the films of 25.1 mu
C/cm(2)and 203 kV/cm for BLT, and 44.2
mu C/cm(2) and 296 kV/cm for BNT, respectively. Moreover, these capacitors did not show fatigue
behaviors after up to 1.75x10(10) switching cycles at the test frequency of 1 MHz, suggesting a fatigue
-
free
character. T
he influences of the La3+ and Nd3+ doping on the properties of the films were comparatively
discussed.

: The optically induced grating enhanced by dc electric field in nematic liquid crystal (LC) doped with
copper porphyrin is studied. The reorien
tational effect of the LC was not observed for the writing beams
with the intensity up to 500 mW/mm(2), but th
e threshold of the reorientation was reduced to 1 mW/mm(2)
with the assistance of an electric pulse applied to the LC. The low threshold for the i
nduced grating can be
retained even after switching off the dc pulse, indicating that an induced field inside the LC is present to
sustain the low threshold operation for the induced grating. The low threshold operation does not persist by
short circuiting

of LC electrodes. The underlying mechanism is explained by an optical surface
-
charge

: This study was designed to explore the role of toll like receptor 4 (TLR4) in myocardial ischemia
reperfusion injury (MI/RI). Male Sprague
-
Dawley rats were randomly divided into sham and IR groups
(36/group).

The rats were sacrificed at various times f
ollowing reperfusion ( 0, 1/2, 1, 2, 4 and 8 h). The
histopathological and ultrastructual changes in the myocardium were examined under a light microscope
and a transmission electron microscope. The TLR4 protein
and mRNA expression were detected by
immunohistochemistry and real
-
time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, respectively. The
levels of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)
-
alpha and interleukin (IL)
-
6 in the myocardium were measured by
enzyme
-
mmunosorbent assays. The injury to the myocardium was severe in the IR group, and there
were no significant improvements in histopathology and ultrastructure of the myocardium during the first 8
h following reperfusion. Positive TLR4 protein staining was o
bserved in both sham and IR groups. The
TLR4 protein levels were significantly increased in the IR group, peaking at 1 h post reperfusion.
Additionally, the TLR4 mRNA levels were also up
-
regulated in the IR group. At all time points, IR rats had
significan
tly higher TNF
-
alpha and IL
-
6 levels than the sham rats (P<0.05). The TLR4 mRNA expression
positively correlated with the levels of TNF
-
alpha and IL
-
6 (r=0.728 and 0.676, P<0.01). Myocardial TLR4

expression was elevated at the early stage of myocardial isc
hemia reperfusion. Activated TLR4 may play a
role in MI/RI by increasing TNF
-
alpha and IL
-
6 expression.

: Closing the energy budget at flux measurement sites is problematic, even when the fetch extends
over flat, homogeneous surfaces with low vegetation cover. We used the residual energy balance and
ordinary least square (OL
S) linear regression methods to
quantify spatial variability in soil heat flux
contributing to energy balance closure (EBC), by deploying a mobile energy system within the footprints of
three Eddy
-
covariance towers located in the steppe of Inner Mongolia,
China. The EBC at the study sites
had a daily average residual of 819 W m(
-
2) with OLS slopes of 0.83
-
0.96. The EBC was better achieved at
the wet site than at the dry site. The spatial variability in soil heat flux was 48 W m(
-
2) (13% of R.) during
the da
y and 15 W m(
-
2) (34%) at night, with an average of 29 W m(
-
2) (24%) across the three sites. A 9%
OLS slope difference due to this variability was recorded from our eight plot measurements. A large
amount of missing energy (110 W m(
-
2) at peak) could occur

with decreasing OLS slope of 23% across the
three grassland sites when soil heat flux is not taken into account. In particular, heat storage in the top soil
layer not only influenced the magnitude of EBC, but also adjusted soil heat flux to match the 'tru
th
schedule'. Heat storage in the top soil layer comprised half of the soil heat flux when the heat flux plate was
deployed at a depth of 30 mm. if this part of heat storage was neglected, the residual of EBC would
increase as large as 60 W m(
-
2) with OLS
slope decreasing 9%. Comparing them with the multiple
-
location
soil heat flux measurements, the single
-
location measurements from near the Eddy
-
covariance towers
obtained a slightly better EBC with the OLS slope increasing by 4%. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All

comparing with pure TiO2. The optimal parameters for the preparation were obtained by adjusting the ratio
of TiO2 in composite photocatalysts and the calcination temperature. Experimental results show that when

of TiO2 is 66% and the ;calcination temperature is 400 degrees C, the as

sample exhibit high photocatalytic activity, i. e. the decoloration ratio of methyl orange solution is above
90%, and COD removal of cigarette factory wastewater is 75%.

: Coordinated collective motion of groups of autonomous mobile robots is studied. A

qualitative
analysis for the collective dynamics of multiple autonomous robots with directed interconnected topology
using nearest neighbor rules is given. A necessary an
d sufficient graphical condition is proposed to
guarantee that the headings of all ro
bots converge to the same heading. The graph having a globally
reachable node plays a crucial role in convergence analysis. Furthermore, we show that the globally
reachable node having no neighbors serves as a group leader as a special case.
