Course Description:


The purpose of this course is to introduce mechanism analysis and design. In the first
half
-
semester, dimensi
onal synthesis, position and velocity analysis of planar linkages will be
covered. The second half
-
semester begins with acceleration analysis of linkages and will
cover cam and gear train design. Normally the time is just enough for kinematics analysis
a
nd design, hence dynamics part can only be taught in subsequent courses.


For a course like this usually the emphasis is placed on analysis, and synthesis is taught
after analysis. But it is wished in this course that students might learn synthesis and an
alysis
at the same time, so that their creativity for design may grow together with their sense of
preciseness, which is needed for analysis.
