SECTION 1  CHANGES FROM THE PREVIOUS RELEASE
GroundWork Monitor Enterprise Release 6.3 includes new features, minor improvements and bug fixes. The changes made in this release
include:
New 'Views' application
Users can now create live diagrams that include visual representations of operations with monitoring data. The views application can be used to
show geographical differences, logical organization, network and connectivity-oriented views or the key measurements for important business
processes. Example diagrams illustrating use of the tool are included in this release.
The views application is based on the Nagvis visualization project. The following accommodations were made to ensure a smooth workflow when
using the views application:
Functions to view and edit diagrams have been separated under different menu items (Views and Administration respectively.) This is to
enable regular users to access diagrams but not modify them, since this is an administrative function.
Live monitoring data in retrieved using the published GroundWork Monitor interfaces.
Authentication and authorization for the views application is integrated into the JBoss portal application.
UI elements have been modified to closely match the appearance of the rest of the application.
Network data collection
This release includes the Cacti network data collection project; previously this component was available as an optional add-on. Inclusion of the
cacti project provides:
Efficient data collection from large numbers of SNMP enabled devices.
Powerful graphing based on cacti-templates.
Status viewer, dashboards, reports and event console combine data from multiple sources including cacti into a consistent view.
Audible alarms in Event Console
The event console application can now generate audible alarms when the operator is away from the console. Disabled by default, this feature
generates sounds via the operators system speakers for the currently displayed event console view.
In addition the event console can optionally consolidate events so that only the current (most recent) event is displayed for each host/service.
Instructions for enabling this feature are included in the bookshelf under _DEVELOPER REFERENCE > Configuring Event Console > Enabling
Pre-processing of Log Messages_.
Dashboards
The default dashboards have been modified in this release as follows:
The first dashboard has been redesigned to include a quick navigation component.
The Webmetrics dashboard has been moved from the top-level navigation to a dashboard sub-page.
A trouble-view dashboard has been added.
JBoss Portal
The portal configuration has changed to provide better session handling for the following applications:
Configuration (Monarch).
Advanced reports.
Views.
Traffic graphing (Cacti).
GroundWork Agents
Support for Oracle Weblogic 10.x has been added to the GroundWork Java agent (JDMA.)
Support for long plug-in results (greater than 512 bytes) has been added to the Linux and Windows agents (GDMA.) For compatibility, this feature
is disabled by default but can be enabled by adding this entry to
:
send_nsca.cfg
wide_plugin_output=on
Other changes in this release
Improved handling of long lists of objects, particularly in the configuration application.
Overrides are preserved when cloning a host (GWMON-8882).
Service templates can now be copied (GWMON-7979).
Can now search for commands (GWMON-8582).
Easier to spot warning messages on pre-flight check (GWMON-8826).
Better handling of schema changes during upgrade (GWMON-8977).
Monarch groups are now exposed via the dassMonarch configuration API (GWMON-8044).
Profile importer now includes profile description.
Long plugin output (up to 4096 bytes) is now supported in NSCA using the
flag.
--wp
Greatly reduced commit times for installations with lots of dependencies defined (GWMON-9045).
Version 1.4.15 of the nagios plug-ins is now included.
The fping feeder is now included in the distribution package.
Customized link text for context links in the status viewer is now supported.
Groundwork acknowledges the National Australia Banks Security Assurance team for the discovery and reporting of security vulnerabilities
resolved in this release.
When installing or upgrading to release 6.3 customers and partners are required to provide a valid license key. Customers upgrading their
production systems are advised to ensure they have received their license key
to their maintenance window.

Installation
The Centos Powered Virtual Appliance can be run on a number of virtualization platforms. It is supported on VMware, and the following release
notes pertain to a typical setup of the appliance.
Getting started with a VMware ESX 3.5 example
Some features of the Virtual Appliance will not be enabled by default. This sequence is typical of configuring a Virtual Appliance to work on ESX
3.5 servers.
1)     Decompress the Virtual Appliance
2)     Use the VMware converter to load the appliance files into ESX. Make sure to select
as the source.
VMware Workstation
3)     Boot the Virtual appliance, and start the Console, so that you can interact with it from the command line.
4)     Wait a few minutes for the initial boot process to finish.
5)     Follow the instructions on the screen to log in and change the groundwork user password. Note: sometimes the VMware console can insert
characters, making this process cumbersome. You might need to try several times.
6)    To work around this issue, ssh to the VM from another client. You will be able to login as user root, password groundwork, and change the
password from the ssh session. The rest of these steps can also be done from the ssh session.
7)   To configure the timezone, execute the following from the command line:
. The default time zone is UTC.  Optionally
system-config-date
reconfigure NTP.
8)   After NTP syncs the system to the new timezone, restart the groundwork services:
service groundwork stop
rm /usr/local/groundwork/nagios/
/nagiosstatus.sav
var
rm /usr/local/groundwork/cacti/htdocs/rra/*.rrd
service groundwork start
This will make all the timestamps in the interface reflect your local time.
For this release of 6.3, VMware tools 3.50-153875.i386.rpm is installed once the user sets a new password. This is sufficient for validating
GroundWork Monitor; however the VMware Tools package may be upgraded by following the instructions provided by VMware for your product.
Note: You will need to set the version of Linux to Red Hat Linux 5 32-bit to automatically upgrade VMware tools in vSphere.
GroundWork Monitor includes all prerequisites and components within a single installation package. Since this virtual appliance is built using the
32-bit version of Centos Linux and GroundWork Monitor this image cannot make use of more than 4GB of RAM.
The software components of GroundWork Monitor are installed under /usr/local/groundwork with the exception of the log rotation configuration
and the start/stop script named /etc/init.d/groundwork. It is used as follows:
/etc/init.d/groundwork {start|stop}
This script can also be used to restart individual services. For example:
/etc/init.d/groundwork restart nagios
Login Access to Portal
For the GW Monitor 6.3 release, there are three users and roles that are provided with a new installation. These users are: admin, operator and
user. To login, use the same login name for the password. For example, to login as the user "operator", the password is operator. Changing the
default passwords upon installation is recommended.
The "admin" user is a specially privileged user. It is used in the creation of shared dashboards, and should never be deleted. It may be disabled if
desired. The admin user, with the administrator role has access to all of the portlets. The other two users will have access to subset of the
available portlets.

At first login, the admin user must copy-and-paste their license key into the portal application under Administration, GroundWork License. Each
license is valid for the subscription duration purchased. Each GWOS installation has a single license file that controls access to the application
user interface. The license file affects only user access to the GWOS portal; it does not affect the ability to start/stop application components or
the data gathering, processing or notification features of the solution. License key validity is checked at user login and is affected by:
The subscription start and end-date
The number of monitored devices configured
Network Service is enabled

SECTION 5  KNOWN ISSUES AND LIMITATIONS
For the 6.2 release, we have changed the role names for the roles admin, operator and user to gwadmin, gwoperator and gwuser
respectively. For customers using LDAP and Active Directory, please make sure to create a new groups called gwadmin, gwoperator and
gwuser and then move the existing users to the correct groups before upgrading to 6.3.
The "My GroundWork" application provides access to the dashboard builder and is, by default, accessible to all users and is not affected
by the 'read-only dashboards' flag. The builder can be used to access functionality that can be used to modify the monitoring system (via
the ServiceInfoPortletInstances and HostInfoPortletInstances portlets to execute commands.) If this access is not desired it is
recommended that the default portlet permissions be modified to disallow access to the "My GroundWork" application or to the individual
portlets mentioned above. (GWMON-8702).
The Event history Overview report does not honor the restricted user views function at this time. (GWMON-9053).
IE browser issue: Importing backgrounds and applying them to a new Nagvis map generate a JavaScript error. (GWMON-9375).
Status viewer context links displayed on Firefox on Mac systems may display incorrectly. (GWMON-9374).
It is advised not to restart the MySQL process without also restarting the gwservices process at the same time. There is a dependency
between these two services and if they become out of sync with one another the GroundWork server will generate Java IO Exception
errors. (GWMON-8783).
Placing portlets in the bottom region of the default-dashboard layout results in the portlet being displayed without a frame or an edit
button. (GWMON-9200).
Snmptrapd has a bug that swaps client and source IP addresses. (GWMON-9346).
In the Event History report, leaving the supported filter blank for any values will not generate the report. (GWMON-8758).
Intermittently after Cacti upgrades, the Thold Templates panel shows errors list of templates and a list of errors from database "undefined
index" for name and thold_type. (GWMON-9286).
When using the IE8 browser in the configuration application some controls on the left-side panel may not display. This issue can be
worked around by adding the GroundWork Monitor server to the Local Intranet Zone within IE8.

Customers using CentOS 4 or RedHat Enterprise Linux 4 are advised that support for these platforms may be discontinued in future releases.
SECTION 7  ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
ABOUT THE NETWORK SERVICE
This version of GroundWork Monitor includes the Network Service component. This component provides the following capabilities:
Provides GroundWork Monitor administrators with software update notifications in their home screen.
Provides environment statistics to GroundWork about the GroundWork Monitor installation
Provides the license key hash to GroundWork for each GroundWork Monitor installation
The Network Service communicates with servers in the
domain every 12 hours via HTTPS (on TCP port 443). All
checkforupdates.com
communication is initiated by the GroundWork Monitor Enterprise server.
The complete set of information sent to GWOS is:
The type of GroundWork Monitor product installed (e.g. Community Edition or Enterprise Edition) and version.
The Operating System vendor and version and basic hardware information (RAM, CPU)
The size of the monitored environment: number of configured devices and hosts, host groups, service checks, users and service checks

MySQL Databases
GroundWork recommends that all MySQL databases be backed up before upgrading. Here are the upgrade procedures to migrate the databases
to the latest version of GroundWork Monitor. Create a back up directory (e.g.
) and enter the following commands to
/usr/local/backup-gwmon/
create the back ups:
Monarch (Configuration)
mysqldump -uroot monarch > /usr/local/backup-gwmon/monarch_-YYYYMMDD-HHMMSS_.sql
Guava (Framework)
mysqldump -uroot guava > /usr/local/backup-gwmon/guava_-YYYYMMDD-HHMMSS_.sql
Foundation (Monitor Data)
mysqldump -uroot GWCollageDB > /usr/local/backup-gwmon/GWCollageDB_-YYYYMMDD-HHMMSS_.sql
Log Reporting
mysqldump -uroot logreports > /usr/local/backup-gwmon/logreports_-YYYYMMDD-HHMMSS_.sql
GroundWork Configuration Files
Monarch
Back up the following files and folders before removing GroundWork Monitor and restore after the 6.3 installation.
tar cfz GWMON-xxx-monarchbackup.tar.gz /usr/local/groundwork/core/monarch/backup
tar cfz GWMON-xxx-performance_views.tar.gz /usr/local/groundwork/core/performance/performance_views
If you have done custom work to these files back up the following:
tar cfz GWMON-xxx-monarchcallout.tar.gz /usr/local/groundwork/core/monarch/lib/MonarchCallOut.pm
tar cfz GWMON-xxx-monarchexternals.tar.gz /usr/local/groundwork/core/monarch/lib/MonarchExternals.pm
Apache
If you have configured Apache for secure SSL authentication any HTTPS certificates need to be preserved (the directory of the HTTPS
certificates may differ from the example below):
tar cfz ssl-keys.tar.gz /usr/local/groundwork/apache2/conf/ssl.key
syslog-ng
tar cfz GWMON-xxx-syslog-ng-data.tar.gz /usr/local/groundwork/
/log/syslog-ng
