Google updates Chrome browser with battery

saving feature

Juan Carlos Perez

Nov 6, 2012 Soucre: PCworld.com

Google released a Chrome browser update with a video
decoding enhancement that the
company claims will help users save battery life.

The feature, available for Chrome on Windows, cuts power consumption by executing video
decoding on graphics processing units instead of on computers' CPUs, Google said in a

blog
post
.

This is because dedicated graphics chips require much less power than computers' CPUs,
resulting in a 25 percent increase in battery life in Google
tests.

Car Dash Receives iPad Mini Makeover Hours After Release

Friday, November 02, 2012

Paul Lilly

Source: Hothardware.com

Just hours after

Apple's

newest tablet went on sale, by the folks at Soundwaves of Tampa, and
they have a handful of pictures and a 3
-
minute YouTube video to prove it.

A couple of fabricators at Soundwaves of Tampa rigg
ed a custom dash in a 2012 Toyota Corolla
before the iPad mini was released.

Once they had the tablet in hand, it was simply a matter of sliding it into the opening and
pushing the dash back in place.

The neat thing about the design is that it would be super easy to the remove the iPad mini if it
ever needed serviced, or if the driver wanted to replace it with a newer model sometime down
the line, provided the dimensions don't change too terribly much.

To go along with the iPad mini dash, Soundwaves of Tampa installed an Audison digital system
with a volume control module located below the automatic shifter.

Autodesk Magic Finger Enables a Touch Pad on Any Surface

You know you have some interesting
technology

on your hands (well, fingers) when you
manage to make Minority Report look outdated.

Engineers at
Autodesk

Research are showing off a proof
-
of
-
concept Magic Finger, which is a
tiny device that turns virtually any surface into a touch pad.

The Finger uses a
micro camera

and an optical flow sensor to detect motion and identify
surfaces.

As small as your finger tip, the device attaches

with a thin strip of Velcro.

You can swipe, pinch, and tap any surface just as you would a
laptop

touch pad or a
tablet
’s
screen.

The Magic F
inger is useful for situations in which a normal touchpad isn’t easy to reach, but it
also has some other interesting uses that go beyond an ordinary touch pad.

Autodesk

researchers point to the Magic finger as a way to share data with other users (by
touching fingertips).

Do you laugh at the skills of other geeks? Do you have tech knowledge that would make the
typical hacker whimper?

If so, you might be a candidate for a new government program aimed at battling cyber enemies
of the state.

The so
-
called Cyber Reserve is being likened to the military reserve: a force of tech experts who
can mobilize to defend the nation in times of cri
sis.

The Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate is handling the
creation of the Cyber Reserve and is starting by recruiting

tech

experts who already have a
history with the government.

But that pool won’t last forever, and the DHS is considering training programs for new blood.

The biggest challenge that the new program is going to face is convincing top techies to take
government

salaries.
