Signal Processing for Uncertain Systems

The last few decades have witnessed tremendous
advances in computing and
signal processing
technologies
, which h
ave contributed much to the succes
sful
handling of certain
signal processing
problems
for complex
systems

that until recently were thought too difficult to be analysed.
Nevertheless, our ability in
fully understanding complex systems is still very limited. One of the
most
typical complexit
ies
is arguably
the

uncertainties in modelling,
analysing
and design
ing

real
-
time systems for effective signal processing.
Uncertainties exist inevitably in almost all model
-
based signal processing problems.
A variety of approaches,
including conceptual, s
tructural, parametric and probabilistic methods, have been proposed to describe
different kinds of uncertainties, which
in turn
give rise to significant challenges for
robust
analysis and design

in the general area of signal processing.


The overall aim o
f this special issue is to bring together the latest/innovative knowledge and advances in
robust
signal processing for various uncertain systems. The emphasis is placed on both practical and
theoretical aspects of signal processing
for
handling
uncertainti
es,
which may depend largely on methods
from artificial intelligence, mathematics, statistics, operati
onal research, and engineering.
The solicited
papers in this special issue should
clearly demonstrate what type of uncertainties is tackled by means of th
e
application in a real
-
world signal processing problem. The paper should
provide solutions, or early promises,
to modelling, analysis and
implementation of signal processing problems for uncertain systems,
such as
communications, networking, sensors and a
ctuators, radar and sonar, medical imaging, biomedical
applications, remote sensing, consumer electronics, computer vision, pattern recognition,
and robotics
.

Dr. Z. Wang

is Reader in Computing and Dynamical Systems at Brunel University in the U.K.


Dr. Wang's research interests include dynamical systems, signal processing, bioinformatics, and
control theory and applications. Since
1997, he has published more than 50 papers in refereed
international journals. He was awarded the Humboldt research fellowship in 1996 from Alexander
von Humboldt Foundation, the JSPS Research Fellowship in 1998 from Japan Society for the
Promotion of Scie
nce, and the William Mong Visiting Research Fellowship in 2002 from the
University of Hong Kong.


Dr. Wang is currently serving as an Associate Editor for five international journals:

, the Honorary Izaak
