Overview

Luminis Platform 5 is the next release of SunGard Higher Education’s portal and web
services delivery platform. The new release
includes
a re
vamped technology foundation
,
simplified management
,
n
ew content
/
applications
/
tools
, new community and
communication
capabilities
,
and further alignment within the SunGard Higher Education
solution set.

Luminis Platform
5

will require no
additional software licensing

for existing clients
.

Architecture and T
echnology

Luminis Platform
5

includes a new

architecture and
set of
technology underpinnings
.
This provides
technical currency

across the system and allows institutions to
ensure a
scalable enterprise deployment
that

align
s

the

portal and web services del
ivery offering
wi
th
constituent

expectations
.
A few notable architecture and technology items include:

S
ervices Orientation
.

W
eb services

and RESTful services
are
used
prominently
throughout the product
.

D
evelopment efforts and the markup in the form of

portlets is
entirely
web services based
.

Modularity and
Application Isolation.

Unlike
earlier versions of the solution,
Luminis Platform
5

is no longer

as
tightly

integrated

with infrastructure pieces
such as
the
database, mail

server
, calendar

server, o
r portal server software. This
approach creates
flexibility and modularity

throughout the system providing
flexible
installation,
simplified
configuration, and
more logical

system
troubleshooting.

Standards Based
.

Along with services orientation and modu
larity,
Luminis
Platform
5

leverage
s

technology standards as much as possible.

Standards around
content, data services, security, and administration now represent and d
rive key
parts of the solution. A few
examples include
:

JSR286 portlet

standards allow

clients to build content per
standard

spec
ifications

and consume
conforming
portlet
s.

Central Authentication Service (CAS) is

an open and well documented
authentication system that acts as th
e basis for user authentication and an
available method for exte
rnal system integration.

The lightweight content management system in Luminis
Platform is based
on Jackrabbit which

implements the JCR API.

Tomcat Application Server is used as the baseline application

server.

3

S
P
RING is a lightweight container used

in Lumi
nis Platform to manage
integration related to data objects, JMS connections and directory access.

RESTful Services

are published via
Apache
CXF and
support the
RESTful standard
JSR
-
311.

JMX beans
are
implemented for
i
nstrumentation,
system monitoring
and
centra
lized
configuration
management.

JAX
-
WS allow
the
system

to work well with web services security tools that may be in use in

certain client

network
s
.

JPA

provides abstraction from the database
-

providing support
for a
number of prominent database app
lications.

SAML

is now a
method within the Luminis Platform

security protocol
stack and supports baseline
i
ntegration with GoogleApps.

Web 2.0

User Experience
.

The system supports a
RIA
-
based user interface using common strategies and
technologies

such
as
A
JAX
,
Velocity,
JQuery

and
Adobe Flex
.

A combination of Ajax
,
Flex

and REST services provide a more dynamic
user interface

and inter
-
portlet
communication
. This removes the need for
server round
-
trips
to update the UI and
provides students, faculty an
d staff with a good overall
user experience.

Ajax & Flex
.

U
sed primarily for user interface development.

SunGard HE UXD Standards Compliant
.

Provides a standard look
-
and
-
feel
and navigation
across all SunGard HE applications.

A portion of the baseline
delivered portlets will be fully compliant with the overall SunGard
user interface

standards. Portlets and theme elements not
included in the
initial release will be
delivered incrementally in releases thereafter.

4

Dynamic Page Content
.

Quick page loads
and resulting response time for better
end user experience.

Personalized Page Layouts
.

Easy to use tools to personalize how content and
applications look
within a view or layout.

Portlet Configuration
.

Each portlet provides t
ools to change various port
let
characteristics such as
title, fonts,
colors, logos, borders
, and background styles.

Drag and Drop Configuration
.

Simple
drag and drop
configuration to change
views, add content, and to modify tab and page locations.

Packaged
+ C
ustom
T
hemes/
S
kins
.

S
ystem will ship with a few
packaged
themes to choose from.

Color schemes and logos can be easily changed and tied
to dynamic groups.
Schools with appropriate skill sets in technologies such as
Velocity can develop new themes

and build out their own theme

portfolio.
SunGard HE services are also available for custom theme development.

Portlet and Application Search Capabilities.

Search functions available in
most portlets providing easy tools to find information of interest within the

.

Features and s
ystem areas related to
personalization
include
:

Dynamic
User
Groups.

D
ynamic groups

are used
to personalize
content,
inform
ation and services throughout
the system.
Integration with

backend ERP
systems provides a
large set of

default

user, group, and course attributes for use
within the personalization framework.
You can use any of these attributes
such as
role, major, depar
tment, college, etc.

to personalize content such as
ERP information,
announcements, web content, portlets, themes/skins, and more.
Administration is
im
plemented
with Adobe Flex modules and improved
usability

to simplify
management of personalization
throu
ghout the system
.

Easy to use dynamic group builder.

Fu
ture development will allow system
applications that use personalization such as Targeted Announcements

to

11

make use of an easy
-
to
-
use dynamic group builder.

This group builder is in
addition to the
core Group Manager
which is
used mainly by administrators.
The easy
-
to
-
use group builder is
designed for

authorized,

non
-
technical users
(i.e., trusted faculty members sending targeted messaging) to quickly build
new audiences in which to cater content.

C
ustom Dynamic Groups.

Lum
inis Platform
also
supports the creation and use
of custom attributes that may not exist in backend systems. You can build new
attribute
s

to use within personalization

and associate the new attributes with
different types of user
s
.
Administration is im
plemented
with Adobe Flex modules
and improved usability to simplify management of personalization throughout the
system.

User Layout Management
.

Cre
ate default user layouts

and views

based on
user
data/
roles/attributes.
Create p
ushed pages with pre
-
populated content to
audiences of all types. Pages can be modifiable by the end user (i.e,. user can
delete
content from
pages,
subscribe
and add new
content and
reposition
page
elements) or
locked
down.

Permission
Delegation.

The
sy
stem
supports the
central
delegation of content
targeting
and
system
administration through defined
permission

groups
built using the same set of pre
-
loaded or custom built attributes

noted above
. Permission delegation increases the efficiency of content
publishing
and administration and removes potential bottlenecks in these areas.

Set Default Landing Page.

End users can decide which page they would like to
set as their default landing page once authenticated into the system.

Adding/Renaming
/Dragging

P
arent Tabs.

Most use cases are supported with
the existing personalization capabilities in the system. Future work is planned,
however, to provide more flexibility in how content is structured and delivered to
users. The system will support adding new p
arent tabs, renaming and
repositioning those tabs.

Banner ERP Integration

The

integration between the Luminis Platform and Banner ERP systems

enables business
process execution, permission and authorization privileges,
user and account integration,

12

and the

dynamic delivery of personalized information. Packaged
ERP

content allows

users
to

easily
access
critical backend

information and services
.
Previously unavailable
information and data is no
w

accessible front and center

through a portlet
-
based Web 2.0
ex
perience
.
Information from the Banner

a
dministrative systems
is synchronized in real
-
time with Luminis Platform providing
strong
personalization

capabilities

and masking the
complexities of
backend,
multi
-
system interaction. Whether viewing and interacti
ng with
information directly in the por
t
al or supplying information back to the authoritative ERP,
users work in a

seamless,
customized

environment
.

Data
Integration.

Critical backend information such as u
sers, courses, terms,
enrollment, add
s,
drop
s
,
profile data,
and grades are automatically kept up
-
to
-
date
between Banner and Luminis Platform.

This data is used extensively throughout
the portal to enable business processes and provide value such as sending
dynamic Targeted Announcements, dynamically
creating course schedules and
views, and providing personalized services and information based on backend
Banner data and permissions.

Account Provisioning/De
-
Provisioning.

Event driven provisioning and de
-
provisioning of user accounts.

Single Sign
-
On and

Session Management.

Luminis Platform 5 now uses
CAS

and BEIS for s
ingle sign
-
on and session management

to the Banner INB and SSB
systems. SSO
eases system access
,
usability
, and integrity

across integrated
Banner web and self service applications.

Banne
r Portlets.

A set of 35+ Banner portlets are offered to ease access and
interaction with
hard to get to backend data.
Luminis Platform provides a
delivery engine coupled with personalization capabilities to
deliver the
important
Banner ERP
information to

users when and where they need it.

Smart and Notify Events.

Special

events sent from Banner into Luminis
Platform are used to notify users of events, required actions, and to provide access
or links to complete those actions.

Examples include grades po
sted, 'wait listed'
class seat opens up, and new course registration.

Future Banner Portlets.

Future

development

will increase the portfolio of
Banner
-
based portlets, dashboards, composite views and workspaces.

LIS 2.0 Services Integration
.

LIS is the ne
w IMS specification for how SISs
exchange e
-
learning data with other apps, including LMSs and collab tools.
Banner and Luminis Platform will provide support in a future deliverable. The
benefit to LIS support in Luminis Platform is that it simplifies the
integration with
Banner and provides certified interop with other SISs supporting SIS (Oracle and
Jenzabar currently announced as of July 2010).

Administration

Luminis Platform 5 virtually separates the administrative server from the end user/portal
server. The two can run on the
same box and run in the same cluster, however, they are
virtually distinct. In addition to offering a dedicated admin area, this approach provides a
number of benefits including the ability to test and/or run large jobs and processes on the
admin side wit
hout affecting the user experience. System administration is now largely
performed through GUI interfaces as opposed to legacy command line utilities.
Administrative modules are developed using primarily Adobe Flex applications and
include the following
management functions:

Software Development Kits

An important part of previous Luminis Platform releases has been the Java API used for
cust
om development work. Luminis Platform 5 is based on a Services Oriented

16

Architecture that provides a set of well defined REST services published via CXF for all
functions of the system.

These services are published from

within

the internal service classes

which contain
business logic, processing and data access combined into a single interface. The public
exposure of this web service interface allows institutions to uniquely leverage the
services specific to their deployment and business needs. Web Servi
ce based API’s are
the most flexible method of API exposure and provide a means for non
-
java languages to
use the API’s as well as the ability to use the API’s remotely.

The base API set is comprised of RESTful service definitions described by the WADL
la
nguage with the ability to add WSDL based SOAP services if necessary. The baseline
release will not contain SOAP services

only RESTful services.

Exposed APIs and
development kits will be an ongoing deliverable.

Migration

Migration will
be available in incremental releases following the initial GA.
Migration scripts will be tested and validated with select clients throughout 2010 and
released incrementally thereafter as completed. Existing clients requiring migration
from

Luminis Platform 4.x to Luminis Platform 5 will need to wait for a future
deliverable sometime after the initial summer 2010 release.
