Journey to the Center of Hawkthorne

-

Complete Script

Note: Thi
s script is intended for v0.1.0. As such, dialogue and cutscenes for worlds not intended for v0.1.0
are skipped here.

All dialogue is based on the script for Digital Estate Planning and edited in order to
streamline scenes and dialogue boxes and in order to facilita
te a logical flow for the game.
Additionally,
this script is based on the assumption that the Player can on
ly play as one character at a time and the
Player has the option to switch characters throughout the game
-

see
Gameplay Elements

page for
character switching
suggestions
.

No tutori
al section has been included. In my opinion, one is not needed
and the instruction page on the main menu is sufficient, but I leave the decision to include one up to
other people.

Finally, a
ll scenes, with the exception of the Cornelius Statue assembling
itself at the end, are conveyed
using the existing spr
ites within the different levels and the V
illage so there is no need for "realistic"
looking cutscenes.

Introductory
Cuts
cene

-

(Note: Although this scene does not appear in the episode, it i
s implied. The
dialogue is
based on dialogue from the Digital Estate Planning

script. This scene is triggered if the Player
waits at the character selection screen for a specified duration.

The purpose of this scene is to establish a
mood and the basic pre
mise without disrupting the game
-
flow and without deviating too much from the
story in Digital Estate Planning.
)

[Fade in on
Gilbert at his desk, typing on

a typewriter; a
nimation is accompanied by a typewriter sound
effect and ominous music]

DIALOGUE BOX:
Mr.

Hawthorne,
please accept my deepest condolences on the passing of your father.
Cornelius spent over 30 years developing a video game for you. It was his dying wish that you and seven
of your closest friends would play it.

Sincerely, Gil
bert Lawson

[Fade to black, s
cene ends. Realistic

ensues
.

Player is then redirected
to the character selection page.

Cornelius/First Battle With Gilbert

-

(This scene is triggered when the player reaches the bridge
in the
Forest. Regardless of which character the Player has selected, the

rest of the

Greendale Seven

all enter
the screen

during this scene. The purpose of this scene is to advance the story and establish the goal of
the game as well as the villain, Gilbe
rt. The dialogue has been taken directly from the script but some
lines and phrases have been cut in order to streamline the text.)

[Cornelius's disembodied head appears over the characters; animation is accompanied by ominous
music and the sky darkens]

CORNELIUS:

Piercinald, in 1980, you said that video games, not moist towelettes, were the business of
the future. Today, moist towelettes are stocked in every supermarket, while arcade after arcade closes.

TROY:

He's got a point.

CORNELIUS:

Nevertheless, I designed this game to be played upon my death by you and whatever cabal
of fruits, junkies, and sluts you call your friends.

PIERCE:

Her name is Britta.

CORNELIUS:

Only one player can win... the first to reach my throne inside Castle
Hawkthorne. Their
reward, Pierce, will be your inheritance. So you see, Pierce, turns out you were right. Video games are
important. Ha Ha Ha ! Worst son ever!

[Cornelius's disembodied head vanishes, the sky brightens again]

PIERCE
:

Well, great. How do I

fight you guys? Which button fights?

[Pierce starts to dig himself into a hole
; alternatively, Pierce panics and runs back and forth if digging
animation has not been implemented
]

JEFF
:

Pierce, calm down. Nobody's gonna fight you.

PIERCE
:

Why not?

TRO
Y
:

Because when you're friends with someone, it's weird to steal their family's money.

ABED
:

And there wouldn't be a lot of sport in beating you. Look at yourself.

[Gilbert enters

from left
-
hand side
]

GILBERT
:

You're playing the game wrong.

PIERCE
:

Why

is Harry Belafonte in here?

GILBERT
:

It's Gilbert
.
And y
ou're not supposed to cooperate, you're supposed to compete.

SHIRLEY:
Pierce, do you know this man
?

Gilbert:
My name is Gilbert Lawson.
I was Cornelius Hawthorne's assistant for over 30 year
s, and

before
that, I was just the

teenager who read the Bible to him in the bath.

Britta: Ew.

JEFF
:

Well, t
hanks for the advice,
Gilbert,
but I think we can choose how we want to play.

GILBERT
:

I suppose we can.

[Gilbert begins crafting throwing knives, cr
afting menu screen becomes temporarily visible

over Gilbert's
sprite
, flickers through different options
]

ABED
:

Whoa. We can pick stuff up?

G
ILBERT
:

This game is more complex than you can imagine. And aside from its programmers, who have
all been deported back to China, I'm the
only
one who knows how it works.

[Gilbert attacks party
. Once party is defeated, the scene ends and the character

that had b
een initially
selected

respawns in the Study Room
]

Gilbert's Note

-

(This note is found where the characters were defeated by Gilbert.

I think including the
scene in which Pierce tries to kill himself just takes up too much time so I've left it out.
)

DIALOGUE BOX: After you've squandered the last of your savings, I'll watch you writhe, penniless, in the
gutter, through a telescope in the penthouse office of Hawthorne Tower.

---

Hilda
-

(For Hilda's dialogue, please see the
Hilda

page.)

---

Blacksmith's House

-

(Note: This dialogue is contingent on the Player having the option to rob and kill the
Blacksmith and his wife.)

[If the Blacksmith is robbed
, he begins panicking
]

BLACKSMITH:
Thief! Thief!

[If the Blacksmith is killed, Wife enters]

BLACKSMITH'S WIFE: Hello, I'm the blacksmith's wife... Aah! Help!

---

Hilda Grieving

-

(Note: This dialogue is

contingent on the Player having killed
the Blacksmith husband
and wife
.

If

the Blacksmith has been killed, his house bursts into flames upon exiting

and Pierce and Abed
are
present

outside
. Hilda starts crying.

SUGGESTION: Abed is the only character who CANNOT kill the
Blacksmith.
)

PIERCE:

What's with the St. Pauli girl?

ABED:

Hilda's parents lived there. Now she has no family. She'll be forced to marry a male villager or
take her chances in the wilderness.

[
Cutscene ends.
Abed remains on screen, but
the selected character

is free to
keep moving at this point]

---

Second Bat
tle With Gilbert

-

(Note: This battle can only occur after the "Strength" Potion has been
concocted. Once

the "Strength" Potion has been concocted, Gilbert appears
upon exiting

the House With
The Painting.

SUGGESTION:
The
"Strength" Potion can only be conc
octed by Britta because it must be
Britta'd. If the Player has selected a different character, it will be necessary to switch characters
before
advancing
-

see
Gameplay Elements

pag
e for character switching
suggestions
.

When Britta exits the
house after having concocted the Potion, all the Greendale Seven are present and Gilbert enters.
)

TROY: Oh, crap! I
t's Gilbert.

PIERCE:

Well, well, well. Looks like someone's one step behind.

GILBERT:

Hardly. While you were exploring the village, I gained enough levels to do this.

[Gilbert attacks the party again. SUGGESTION: The Player can control

Britta during this battle (
it is
impossible for the Player to
have
switch
ed

characters between c
oncocting the Potion and encountering
Gilbert
);

Britta

must remain alive long enough to use the potion
.

Alternatively, Gilbert steals the potion
after a certain number of time.
]

JEFF:

Oh, great! Gilbert! Oh, great! Evil Jedi lightning Gilbert! Britta, dri
nk that super strength potion you
made.

[If the Player

fails to USE the Potion before
being attacked by Gilbert, the c
haracter respawns in the
Study Room; if the Player

manages to USE the Potion before being
attacked by Gilbert
, the battle is
successfully

completed. Gilbert
still attacks Britta but the c
haracter is not d
ead, merely knocked out, and
thus does not
return to Study Room; Gilbert takes Potion]

JEFF:

Damn it, I thought we could count on Britta to not screw up drinking.

GILBERT:

This'll be fun.

[Ominous sound effect] What the hell?

JEFF:

Here's hoping we can count on her to screw up making potions.

GILBERT: [groans, dies]

[Fade to black
, scene ends]

Village/Abed's Farewell

-

(Although Abed staying with Hilda is contingent on the Play
er
havin
g killed the
Blacksmith,
this scene
can proceed in
the

same
manner regardless of the Player's actions

for the
purposes of v0.1.0
.
However
, an alternate
result could eventually

be im
plemented wherein Abed can be

unlocked

(Abed only stays in the village

because Hilda's parents are dead)
; this alternative
would have

repercussions, see Village/Backstory on the
Unseen Levels

page for backstory idea of Blacksmith as cult
leader.)

[
Fade i
n.
Britta wakes up]

BRITTA: How did you beat Gilbert?

SHIRLEY:

Oh, you know. Teamwork.

TROY:

We were headed for the black caves to find the white crystal. We were just saying goodbye to
Abed.

ABED:

I'm gonna stay here in the village with Hilda and help

her rebuild her life.

BRITTA:

Abed, she's a program.

ABED:

People have said similar things about me.

PIERCE:

Uh
-
oh. He's playing the rain man card. Let's bounce. I've got an inheritance to win.

[Scene ends]

---

Black Caverns

-

(This scene is triggered after defeating the first boss; the White Crystal
appears
. The
Greendale Seven are all present after defeating the boss
)

TROY:

All right! The white crystal!

ANNIE:

We did it
!

PIERCE:
I'll take it. I've earned it by having friend
s. [Pierce takes the White Crystal]

[Scene ends]

---

Castle Hawkthorne

-

(This sce
ne is triggered once the Player reaches the end of the last level in the Black
Caverns; the Caverns open up into a cliff that overlooks Castle Hawkthorne.
)

JEFF:

This is it.

[Gilbert enters]

GILBERT:

It certainly is.

ANNIE:

You again?

GILBERT:

Now I'll have that crystal.

[The Player can control
the selected character at this point. Player must attack Gilbert a couple of times
to trigger next dialogue box; att
acks have no effect on Gilbert.]

TROY:

What? Come on!

[Menu pops up over Gilbert, cursor navigates through dozens of weapons, skills, etc.]

PIERCE: Where'd you get all that stuff?

[Gilbert attacks party with super
-
charged attacks. Characters are
knocked down and hurt but still alive.]

JEFF:

[crouching]
What the hell, Gilbert? You're cheating, which I have no problem with, but you're
getting caught, and that's not cool!

PIERCE:

Yeah, don't be a knob. That inheritance is rightfully mine!

I'm his s
on.

GILBERT:

So am I.

PIERCE:

What? That can't be true. You're half... white.

GILBERT:

Do you remember your childhood nanny, Etta? Well, Etta had a hot cousin. My mother. So you
see, Pierce, I am your half
-
brother, and I am more your father's son than y
ou ever were, so shut up and
play the game.

PIERCE:

Why you
--

[Gilbert unleashes a final attack and party is defeated
. The party vanishes. Gilbert is seen opening the
door to Hawkthorne castle using the Crystal.]

[Scene ends]

---

[Character respawns

in the

Study Room. NOTE: It's important for the story that the
Player

has to start
from the beginning here, but I think normally characters should simply respawn at the last save point (a
save point could be provided at the Village, for example).

Optional
ly player can enter

the F
orest. If so,
the Player will be able to see that all the trees have been cut down.]

New Village

-

(This scene is triggered upon entering the village again after respawning.)

[Abed and Hilda approach the characters.]

ABED:

Hello
, old friends.

TROY:

Abed!

ABED:

You remember Hilda.

HILDA:

I live in the village. I love Abed.

ABED:

I
f you max out a character's trust and affection levels, you can gain access to a front
-
end scripting
language. Watch.

[sound effect, Hilda makes a b
aby]

Baby:

Cool cool cool!

ABED:

She can make babies for me.

TROY:

Oh, and I can't? I can't.

ABED:

Come on inside. I built this from scratch. Check out my castle.

BRITTA:

I hope this isn't blood gold.

[Abed leads characters around]

ABED:

This is my family. Baby Abed has my eyes and her bonnet. Each baby is capable of executing
custom code, which means you can write a code that makes one baby tell another baby what to do,
much like real children on a playground.

Annie:

Oh, Abed, but...

J
eff:

Annie, let's find the tin man's heart later. Abed, how much stuff do you have here and what can we
make with it?

ABED:

That depends.

JEFF:

On?

ABED:

On what you can imagine.

[
For the purposes of v0.1.0, the s
cene

can fade to black at this point and end
.

The player must navigate
the character back to Castle Hawkthorne.]

---

Battle with Cornelius

-

(This scene is triggered after reaching Castle Hawkthorne after proceeding from
the New Village.)

[Character enters

castle
, and the "camera"
either
immediately pans righ
t to show Gilbert entering the
throne room or the scene fades in on Gilbert entering the throne room after the Player presses enter
over the Castle in the overworld
]

CORNELIUS:

Welcome, y
ou are the fir
st to make it to the Throne of Hawkthorne. Let me take a look at
you.
..

According to your complexion, I think you might be
...

Gilbert Lawson. Is this true? Just a moment.
Hello, Gilbert. Due to the nature of our relationship, I'll need your electronic sign
ature on this legally
-
binding agreement.

[
Legal Agreement
dialogue box pops up over Gilbert's sprite.]

LEGAL AGREEMENT: Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States
which may be included within this Union, according to
their respective Numbers, which shall be
determined by adding to the whole Number of free Persons, including those bound to Service for a Term
of Years, three fifths of all other Persons.

CORNELIUS: It dictates that you will never, ever besmirch the Haw
t
h
orne name with any outlandish
notions regarding your genealogical origins. You are the bastard offspring of a colored seductress and an
unknown, weak
-
willed
miscegenist
, and any assertion on your part to the contrary will be grounds for
the seizure of this

inheritance. Do you agree?

[Gilbert hesi
tates.]

CORNELIUS: It's a simple question, Gilbert. Do you agree?

[Gilbert selects "Decline" on the dialogue box.]

CORNELIUS: Thank you for being honest, Gilbert. Good
-
bye.

[Cornelius turns red, begins attacking
Gilbert.]

GILBERT:

No! I'm your son!

[Begins running to the left to evade Cornelius's attacks
; the screen follows
his movement
.]

CORNELIUS:

I'm sorry, Gilbert. I always knew you'd disappoint me.

[At this point,
Abed's babies come into vi
ew as Gilbert approaches. Abed's b
abies begin to attack
Cornelius.]

CORNELIUS: Ah, I see you've chosen teamwork. A coward's strategy. I will upgrade your challenge
accordingly.

[EXT shot shows Castle Hawkthorne crumble and reass
emble itself as a giant moving statue.]

STONE CORNELIUS: I bequeath my fortune to no inferiors!

[Shot switches to standard sidescroller view. Player can now control

selected

character; characters are
riding different weaponized vehicles and must inflict
sufficient damage to successfully complete the
battle. When enough damage has been inflicted,
characters are swatted away by Cornelius.]

CORNELIUS: Ha ha ha!

[A
nimation shows Pierce riding atomic bomb.]

PIERCE:
Hey! L
ook at me now, dad!

[Bomb hits Corn
elius.]

CORNELIUS: Aah!

[Statue collapses, Cornelius is defeated. Cornelius head lies sideways on the floor of the throne room;
Gilbert approaches.]

CORNELIUS: I suppose you're wondering, player, why program myself letting you destroy me? Because I
am
a man of honor, so you've earned the pleasure of my death.

Gilbert:

But I didn't. I'm not the one that beat you.

[Gilbert begins to walk away from Cornelius.]

[Greendale Seven enter from left
-
hand side.]

PIERCE
:

Yes, you are.

BRITTA
:

We're forfeiting.

[Game system dialogue box pops up

over Greendale Seven sprites
.

Optionally, a counter can count
down the seconds.
]

GAME SYSTEM
:

Warning. Player forfeit in 30

seconds
.

PIERCE
:

Gilbert, you're right. You were more his son than me. You took all his crap and you didn't even
get to take his name.

GILBERT
:

He once sat on me in church just so he could see better.

PIERCE
:

We've only been playing this game a couple of hours. You've been playing it your whole life, and
now it's time for your reward, brother. So
go back

there and kill our dad.

GILBERT
:

Thank you, Pierce.

[Gilbert kicks Cornelius and defeats him.
Gilbert the
n t
akes the throne and fireworks go off.

Scene ends.]

[Game ends]
