About the BP Oil Spill

The

BP

oil

spill,

also

known

as

the

Deep
-
water

Horizon

oil

spill,

was

an

oil

spill

in

the

Gulf

of

Mexico
.

This

oil

spill

began

on

April

20
th

2010

and

continued

until

July

15
th

2010
.

This

event

is

rated

the

second

biggest

environmental

disaster

in

U
.
S
.

history
.

O
n

April

20
th

2010
,

there

was

an

explosion

and

a

large

fire

on

the

Deep
-
water

Horizon

semi
-
submersible

Mobile

Offshore

Drilling

Unit,

also

called

the

MODU
.

The

explosion

killed

11

workers

and

injured

16

other

people
.

This

fire

caused

the

Deep
-
water

Horizon

to

burn

and

sink
.

This

caused

a

huge

offshore

oil

spill

in

the

Gulf

of

Mexico
.

Oil

was

leaking

from

the

rig

extremely

fast,

and

at

the

rate

of

almost

8
,
000

barrels

per

day
.

Many

dolphins,

birds

and

even

endangered

sea

turtles

were

killed

by

the

oil
.

People

thought

that

somewhere

between

90

million

to

180

million

gallons

of

oil

were

spilled

into

the

ocean
.

The oil spill happened because part of a
colourless bubble of natural gas had come up from
the well. It got very big very fast as it went up the
drill column. It then shot through many of the main
seals. The bubble of gas was far under the sea in
crystal form. It is called a methane bubble .The
bubble went up through the drill column, and broke
safety barriers. A cloud of gas that was surrounding
the rig supposedly caught the rig on fire and caused
it to explode.

Efforts to Stop Oil Flow

There

were

many

efforts

being

made

to

stop

the

flow

of

oil

for

those

three

months

that

the

spill

was

happening
.

The

flow

of

oil

finally

stopped

when

the

refinery

was

sealed

with

a

cap

on

July

15
th

2010
.

Some

of

the

ideas

that

they

came

up

with

to

stop

the

oil

were

to

use

remotely

operated

underwater

vehicles

to

close

blowout

preventer

valves

on

the

wellhead
.

This

was

to

stop

the

oil

from

coming

out

of

the

well
.

However

all

these

attempts

to

stop

the

oil

flow

had

failed
.

The

second

attempt

was

to

try

something

that

had

already

been

successful

in

shallower

water
.

They

thought

the

flow

would

stop

if

they

would

place

a

125

ton

containment

dome

over

the

biggest

leak

and

then

pipe

the

oil

into

a

storage

container

that

was

on

the

shore
.

This

also

failed

to

work

because

the

gas

leaked

from

the

pipe

then

combined

with

cold

water

made

crystals,

which

blocked

the

opening

of

the

dome
.

There

were

three

oil

leaks

that

were

leaking

in

the

ocean

and

in

the

beginning

of

May,

the

BP

was

able

to

stop

one

of

them
.

This

was

when

the

remotely

operated

submersible

vehicle

was

used
.

This

helped,

but

the

oil

was

still

leaking

out

of

the

other

two

leaks

at

the

rate

of

about

210
,
000

gallons

a

day
.

Oil Clean Up

There

was

lots

being

done

to

try

and

clean

up

the

Gulf

of

Mexico

oil

spill
.

Cleaning

up

the

oil

spill

consisted

of

lots

of

manual

labor
.

Workers

had

to

work

very

hard

to

wipe

oiled

grass

at

the

outer

edges

of

marshes
.

To

do

this

they

used

pads

that

attract

oil

but

don’t

absorb

water
.

Even

though

the

grass

would

for

sure

die,

the

purpose

is

to

get

rid

of

the

heaviest

part

of

the

oil

to

prevent

tides

from

pushing

it

even

further

into

the

marshes
.

Across

channels,

around

marshes

and

on

shorelines,

4
.
5

million

feet

of

boom

was

spilled

out

into

the

ocean
.

There

are

different

kinds

of

boom

that

were

used
.

The

Barrier

boom

is

made

to

block

oil
.

Snare

boom

would

catch

big

globs

of

oil
.

Absorbent

boom

sucks

up

the

oil

that

is

liquid
.

Boom

had

to

be

put

in

areas

where

the

waves

were

able

to

move

it

around
.

This

wasn’t

to

remove

the

oil,

but

to

break

it

up
.

Many

shrimp

fishing

boats

were

hired

as

skimming

vessels

which

surround

oil

so

that

pumps

were

able

to

pull

it

from

the

water
.

The

skimmers

were

able

to

collect

more

than

15
.
5

million

gallons

of

oil
.

The

company

BP

set

aside

32
.
2

billion

dollar

fund

for

the

Gulf

of

Mexico

cleanup

effort
.

Health and Social Education

This relates to the Area of Interaction Health
and Social
Education
for a couple different
reasons. This event had effects on some
people’s health. Many people in
Louisiana
were
hospitalized
with health problems. Every one of
them said it was due to breathing in the toxic oil
chemicals.

I

think

that

the

main

reason

it

connects

to

Health

and

Social

Education

is

because

we

can

all

learn

from

what

happened
.

We

now

know

how

big

of

a

disaster

this

had

caused

and

we

also

know

to

be

much

more

careful

when

delivering

oil
.

Many

people

had

to

clean

up

animals,

clean

up

the

ocean

and

clean

up

the

shorelines
.

That

was

tough

work

and

it

hopefully

wont

happen

again

now

that

we

are

more

educated

about

how

to

better

handle

oil
.

Also,

BP

will

make

sure

that

the

boats

are

safer

because

they

don’t

want

to

pay

billions

of

dollars

for

cleanup

fines

again

or

have

themselves

look

really

bad

to

the

rest

of

the

world

for

causing

this

disaster
.

This

event

harmed

or

killed

many

ocean

animals

and

we

would

never

want

that

to

happen

again

either
.

This event had an effect on the economy
because it cost a lot of money to fix. Oil costs a
lot of money and tons of it went to waste in the
ocean. This means that more money is needed
to dig for more oil now that we lost so much of
it from the spill. This event has majorly affected
fishing and tourism industries in the Gulf of
Mexico.

There

wont

be

much

economic

damage

to

the

rest

of

the

nation
.

This

event

only

reduced

economic

growth

by

about

1

percent
.

This

event

has

made

places

where

there

is

oil

loose

money

as

tourism

is

moving

elsewhere

and

no

one

wants

to

go

to

the

beach

there

anymore
.

Also,

this

event

effected

gas

prices
.

It

is

thought

that

the

amount

of

money

losses

could

amount

to

30

billion

dollars
.

This

event

was

not

just

an

environmental

disaster,

but

it

was

a

political

disaster

too
.

Even

though

the

incident

wasn’t

the

government’s

fault,

they

failed

to

respond

to

it

fast

enough
.

The

U
.
S
.

government

had

made

certain

rules

since

the

Exxon

Valdez

disaster

in

Alaska
.

It

was

supposed

to

have

disaster

mitigation

equipment
.

This

basically

meant

to

have

firebombs

that

would

help

contain

the

oil

and

stop

it

from

spreading
.

The

U
.
S
.

didn’t

even

follow

their

own

rules
.
.

This

event

has

a

massive

effect

on

the

environment

and

really

did

a

lot

of

harm

to

it
.

This

event

has

killed

many

animals

and

ruined

many

beaches
.

There

are

some

scientists

who

are

in

the

Gulf

of

Mexico

studying

what

the

environmental

impacts

are
.

Some

of

the

oil

went

all

the

way

down

deep

into

the

ocean
.

The

oil

that

was

at

the

top

layer

of

the

ocean

would

wash

up

on

the

shore

and

ruin

the

beach
.

The

beaches

were

covered

in

oil

and

took

countless

hours

to

clean

up
.

The

oil

also

washed

up

into

many

marshes

and

killed

tons

of

grass
.

This

will

have

an

ongoing

effect

on

the

environment
.

The

affects

of

the

spill

didn’t

just

end

when

the

spill

did
.

O
il

was

pouring

out

at

the

rate

of

53
,
000

barrels

per

day
.

It

is

too

hard

to

even

picture

how

much

oil

went

into

the

ocean
.

A

lot

of

it

we

couldnt

even

see
.
