1.1 Eco
-
friendly products and materials

Before reading through this press release we would like to send out a
message: even though Völkl has already been awarded with some
environmental decorations, we don’t want to suggest we are a “green
company”
or an “eco brand”. Despite a lot of commitment in this area
we know that there is still a long way to go to become really “green”. But we can walk this path faster if
you, as a snowboarder, join us. What we can promise you is that our environmentally
-
accep
table
products often perform better than conventional boards!

Use of sustainable resources

-

hemp / linen topsheet

-

recycled base material

-

wooden sidewalls

-

minimum use of resin

-

recycled steel for edges

-

hard wood veneer instead of fiberglass

B
esides the
Cashew

and
Yavana

now also the
Vice SQD

is produced in an eco
-
friendly way! Instead
of a plastic topsheet the boards are equipped with a tear proof hemp/linen surface and instead of
traditional ABS plastic the sidewalls are made of flexible wood

(Yavana & Cashew)

this saves 400
grams of plastic! Additionally, we try to reduce the use of resin and other toxic materials to the
minimum. And even though the black base might look inconspicuous, it’s pretty shrewd as a good
portion of it is made of r
ecycled material, as are the steel edges.

Our commitment to the environment brought us the
EuroSIMA Ecological Innovation Award

in 2010

a signal that we are on the right path, but at the same time a motivation to develop more eco
-
friendly
alternatives.

Our sustainable consciousness doesn’t stop with the production of boards either. Our
Legacy Streetwear line

bears the
GOTS

symbol

that guarantees the use of organic
materials and socially acceptable manufacturing.

Völkl Snowboards wins EuroSIMA a
ward

Ecological Innovation Prize for three exemplary Snowboards

Every year, the EuroSIMA Industry Awards are given out Europe
-
wide to companies,
athletes and personalities that are pushing this sport with exceptional achievements
and ideas. On October 1,

2010 the award ceremony was held in Saint
-
Jean
-
de
-
Luz within an evening
ceremony.

Thereby Völkl Snowboards was awarded the
ECOLOGICAL INNOVATION PRIZE

which carries a
value of 5.000 Euro. A jury of experts that are appointed by the EuroSIMA decided to gi
ve the prize to
Völkl Snowboards for their eco
-
friendly snowboard range. The boards Cashew, Yavana, and Vice SQD
stand for ecologically sensitive production. These snowboards have a tear
-
resistant hemp/linen top
instead of a plastic topsheet and also have
flexible wooden sidewalls instead of normal plastic ones.
This alone saves more than 400 gram of plastic for every board. Additionally the use of synthetic resin
and other toxic materials were reduced to a minimum. Even the base is more ecological now. It
consists of 80% recycled base material and even the steel edges are made of renewable resources.

By winning this award Völkl Snowboards is giving a clear signal for ecological awareness and proofs
that they are on the right track for a better future.

1.3 Eco

-
Technology

HEMP/LINEN TOP CONSTRUCTION

For the Cashew’s topsheet Völkl used a natural hemp/linen weave with
topside prin
t sealing instead of a conventional plastic topsheet. It’s a
technical material with excellent durability and tear
-
proof characteristics. A topsheet made from
renewable resources!

> Cashew / Yavana / Vice SQD

HARDWOOD VENEER

The environment benefits from
this veneer inlay and so does your performance. The inlay strengthens
the woodcore in the upper and lower layer on the full length of the board. This provides more pop and
lively riding characteristics, while at the same time reducing the amount of fibergl
ass and therefore
doing something good for our planet.

> Cashew

WOODEN SIDEWALLS

Lab tests showed that wooden sidewalls have a more balanced flex curve than conventional ABS
sidewalls without sacrificing stability! Völkl’s wooden sidewalls consist of seve
ral connected layers

a
stunning visual feature! A complex special impregnation process protects the wood against moisture
and the effects of Mother Nature. All wooden sidewalls feature additional urethane dampening on both
top and bottom. Brand
-
new: the
lightweight dampening layer made of shock
-
absorbing PU on top of
the edge.

Sidewalls made of dark nutwood and light ash tree:
> Yavana

Light ash tree:
> Selecta / Squad Prime / Squad Rocker / Cashew / Soul Surfer

RECYCLED BASE

Whatever’s left over from t
he regular base production gets processed into pellets, which we grind and
sinter. The resulting bases made of off
-
cuts and by
-
products offers the same high quality as a regular
base, but gives our planet some love.

> Cashew / Yavana / Vice SQD

RECYCLED S
TEEL EDGES

Also the steel edges are constructed of recycled steel. Resources were reduced but not technology
and know
-
how!

with its Convex Powder Base does a great job: the shorter contact
length with elevated sidewalls offers the board a playful feel, while
maximum float helps you stomp almost every trick! For smooth

Eco

rounder for slope, park and powder!

We know that a single snowboard can’t save the world, but, as the
saying goes, from small acorns do mighty oaks grow. That’s why the
Y
avana is crammed with as much “green” technology as possible:
minimal use of resin and other toxins; a base mainly made of
recycled material; wooden sidewalls with dampening; a
hemp/canvas topsheet

all together these save more than 400
grams of plastic!
Needless to say that we worked as hard on the
performance side of the board to create the perfect all
-
mountain
weapon. The Yavana’s new directional freestyle sidecut allows
progressive riding in the backcountry, on the slope and in the park. It
offers stro
ng edge hold for carving but, at the same time, is soft
enough for some serious jibbing! To put a smile on your face on
powder days, we equipped the board with a Pin

for maximum float. The Yavana is a real lady: creative, easy

1.7 Fashion: Völkl Legacy Label

Your product
choice can change the world. Make a small contribution to the environment, fair trade
and your own health!

GOTS (GLOBAL ORGANIC TEXTILE STANDARD) & ORGANIC
CERTIFICATION

GOTS is the leading worldwide textile processing standard for organic fibers,
guaran
teeing fabrics that are harmless to health and have socially acceptable
production. Raw materials may not be genetically modified; they may only originate from organic
cultivation and be processed using organic methods. Compulsory labor, child labor, abuse

and
discrimination are forbidden, while fair salaries, freedom of assembly and labor protection are the
minimum social criteria considered by the GOTS, who organize inspections on a regular basis. For the
first time, a symbol stands for worldwide standard
ized requirements that guarantee the ecological
quality of fabrics: from the cultivation of fibers to eco

friendly and socially acceptable manufacturing as
well as standardized labeling.

2.1
Rocker or Camber Shape?

“Rocker” is a well
-
established term among surfers, snowboarders and wakeboarders. It describes a
board shape that incorporates a
negative / reverse camber
. Boards with a “conventional” camber
feature
two contact points

whe
n the board is lying flat on the ground, one in the nose and the other
one in the tail. Due to the Rocker Shape’s negative camber the board touches the ground at
one
point
, which is in the middle of the board. The nose and tail are floating in the air. The

length of this
flat section between the bindings of freestyle and freeride boards varies according to the shape profile
and intended use.

As early as the 80s the ski and snowboard industry were experimenting with the first construction
attempts of such a
shape. Völkl Snowboards deliver an
entire concept behind the current trend
; a
concept that is based on state
-
of
-
the
-
art laboratory tests and years of experience and know
-
how.

In theory, a Rocker or “Reverse Camber” Shape provides better float in powder and

is generally easy
to turn and playful. However, if you just try to re
-
bend a conventional board shape, the board loses its
dampening properties and edge hold. This is why all other parameters have to be re
-
adjusted, too.
Form follows function!

ROCKER
-
SPE
CIFIC SIDECUTS

Depending on the range of use, the specific adaptation of sidecuts
emphasizes the board’s individual riding characteristics. Nose & tail
become a bit wider and the sidecuts in these areas are equipped with smaller radii. Therefore Völkl
boa
rds with Rocker offer amazing edge pressure and the same grip as boards with conventional
camber on icy slopes. Völkl Snowboards offers three different rocker
-
specific sidecuts: the
All
-
Mountain / Powder Rocker
, the
Freestyle Rocker

and the
Easy Rocker
.

C
AMBER
-
SPECIFI C SIDECUTS

“Camber” describes a board shape that incorporates a classic / positive
camber. These boards feature two contact points when the board is lying
flat on the ground: one in the nose and the other one in the tail. In between those con
tact points, the
board is bowed providing the board with a certain snap that helps cope with the forces unleashed
during a ride. A strong camber provides more edge
-
hold on icy slopes; a smoother camber makes the
board more responsive. Camber boards offer v
ery direct power transmission and great rides when it’s
all about speed. At Völkl, riders can choose between three different camber
-
specfiic sidecuts:
Pro
Camber
,
Freestyle Camber

and
Easy Camber
.

2.2 Squad Prime or Squad Rocker

To satisfy all customers
needs, Völkl Snowboards offers two absolutely high
-
tech boards, one with the
Pro Camber Shape and one with a Freestyle Rocker Shape.

SQUAD PRIME

As much freestyle as you can get: Pro Camber Shape for huge airtime &
progressive park riding!

Thanks to it
s superfast edge
-
to
-
edge transitions due to direct power
transmission, you can set up for the next jump straight after landing, while the
Pro Camber Shape

allows for perfectly controlled missions in icy pipes.

This stick is not only equipped with a 100 per
cent freestyle attitude, but also
with the ultimate in Völkl’s flagship technology: triple Premium Carbon for
solid pop on take
-
off,
Horror
-
Shock Absorber

for soft landings after huge
booters, and wooden sidewalls with dampening for more stability on rails
.

Our pro team loves this sick board that will redefine your limits!

SQUAD ROCKER

The perfect park weapon:
Freestyle Rocker Shape

for jibs & butters!

We adjusted the dimensions of the core and combined it with a triple Premium
Carbon Weave for more jib
bing pop, while great response saves you from
unintentionally “folding” the nose or tail. The negative camber with a shorter
contact length makes turning easy, thus helping you with reverts and butters.

You wanna cruise on the slope from time to time? No p
roblem

on its edge
the Squad Rocker rides like a Camber board. The integrated
Shock
Absorber

and the wooden sidewalls with dampening offer even more Völkl
high
-
tech. A nice side effect of the Rocker Shape, which provides you with
more float, is that you’
ll be able to stomp your tricks into even the most
bombed out landings!

4.1
Shock Absorber

The Völkl Shock Absorber is made of a special high
-
density hardwood that absorbs the forces that
occur during a landing and it also
protects the woodcore from tiny cracks.

4.2 Horror
-
Shock Absorber

Huge jumps and hard landings? No problem thanks to the
Horror
-
Shock Absorber

that’s even able to withstand the weight of a compact car!

The HSA is made of two glued hardwood inlays th
at are milled into the core in the
binding area towards the nose and tail. The H
-
shaped inlay absorbs all shocks and impacts of hard
landings and huge jumps. The Horror
-
Shock Absorber now withstands the weight of a compact car
and makes the Squad boards ex
tremely strong and durable.

> Squad Prime / Squad Rocker

4.3 Traditional Shock Absorber

This consists of one single hard wood layer. It is not milled into the core but
inserted where the core tapers down. Together with a V
-
Flex inlay the Shock
Absorber
makes the board stronger with better torsion properties.

Carbon inlays.

-
shaped strips each embedded in nose an
d tail.

> Jibster SQD / Riot SQD / Dice

POP

7 Powder Channel

Brings conventional swallowtail constructions to perfection: the
unique
Powder
Channel

overcomes the drawbacks of conventional swallowtail boards! The
flexible channel made of robust plastic closes the gap i
n the wood
-

core, even
making switch riding possible. In powder the channel’s special scoop acts like a
surfboard’s fin giving you an incomparably surfy feeling.

> Selecta

8 Convex slide & convex powder base

Slide it hard! Thanks to the elevated sidewal
ls it seems as if the edges were
floating in the air without even touching the rail

no more edge
-
catching slams,
but rather playful riding characteristics instead.

Convex Slide Base:

> Jibster SQD

Endless powder dreams! Playful and forgiving. The reduced

flow resistance
offers massive flotation in powder.

9 Grip
-
lacquer topsheet

Developed in 2003, our
Grip
-
Lacquer Topsheet

has been an extremely popular freestyle feature
since then! It either comes in the form of partial desig
n elements acting as a stomp pad, or it covers
the whole topsheet like artwork, thus supporting one
-
foot tricks and grabs. The pa
raffin molecular
structure

in the
Grip
-
Lacquer Topsheet

prevents snow from sticking to the board, despite its rough
structure.
