SUBMITTALS

Comply with provisions of Section
3.18 of the General Conditions.

A.

SHOP DRAWINGS

Submit detailed drawings showing layout of joist units, special
connections, joining an
d accessories. Include mark number, type,
location and spacing of joists, bridging, and top and bottom chord
extensions. Provide templates or location drawings for installation
of anchor bolts and metal bearing plates.

B.

STRUCTURAL CALCULATI
ONS FOR SPECIA
L JOISTS

1.

Special joists and joist girders shall be designed for the load
designations specified on the structural drawings. Designs
shall properly account for the distribution of concentrated
loads, live loads and for the effect of openings. Designs are

to meet requirements of SJI.

2.

Joists and joist girders shall meet the following deflection
criteria per SJI. Maximum live load deflection shall not
exceed L/240 for roofs and L/360 for floors where L = span
length, center to center of bearing.

3.

Designs s
hall include the net wind uplift loads indicated on
the Drawings.

4.

Provide joist girder bottom chord bracing to meet SJI
slenderness ratio criteria. Bracing shall not develop
continuity in the joist system unless continuity has been
provided for in the jo
ists.

5.

Structural calculations shall be prepared, stamped and
signed by a Structural Engineer licensed in the State of
Washington.

C.

PRODUCT DATA

Submit manufacturer’s specifications and installation instructions
for each type of joist and accessories. In
clude manufacturer’s
certification that joists comply with SJI “
Standard
Specifications”
and project requirements.

Joist fabrication shall be in compliance with SJI “S
tandard Specification,
Load Tables and Weight Tables.”

Field
-
welding processes and welding operators shall be in accordance
with American Welding Society “Structural Welding Code,” AWS D1.1.

Inspection: Inspect joists and girders in accordance with SJI

Standard

Specifications.

1.6

DELIVERY, STORAGE AN
D HANDLING

Deliver, store and handle steel joists as recommended in SJI

Standard
Specifications.” Handle and store joists in a manner to avoid deforming
members and to avoid excessive stresses.

2.3

FABRICATION

Fabricate steel joists a
nd joist girders in accordance with the approved
shop drawings and SJI Standard Specification. Provide top and bottom
joist chord extensions where indicated.

A.

BEARING

1.

Provide sloped bearing ends where joist or joist girders
slope exceeds 1/4 inch in 12 i
nches.

2.

Provide bearing lengths per SJI requirements unless greater
bearing lengths are shown on the Drawings.

Remove loose scale, rust and other foreign materials from
fabricated joists, joist girders and accessories and apply one coat
of primer paint pe
r SJI
Standard
Specifications. This primer paint
is for shipping purposes only and is not considered part of the
painting
work specified in Section

09900
.

PART 3

EXECUTION

3.1

INSPECTION

Verify completed construction will permit and support steel joist and joist
girder erection. In the event of discrepancy, immediately notify the
Engineer. Do not proceed or install in areas of discrepancy until all such
discrepancies have been fully resolved.

3.2

ERECTION

Place and secure steel joists in accordance with SJI “
Stand
ard
Specifications,” final shop drawings, and as herein specified.

3.3

ANCHORAGE

A.

GENERAL

Furnish anchor bolts, bearing plates, and other devices to be built
into concrete and masonry construction. Coordinate placement of
anchors in concrete and masonry con
struction for securing bearing
plates and angles. Refer to Sections 03300 and/or 04200 for
installation of anchors set in concrete and/or masonry.

B.

PLACING JOISTS

Do not start placement of steel joists until supporting work is in
place and secured. Plac
e joists on supporting work, adjust and
align in accurate locations and spacing before permanently
fastening. Provide temporary bridging, connection, and anchors to
ensure lateral stability during construction.

C.

BRIDGING

Install bridging simultaneously
with joist erection, before
construction loads are applied. Anchor end of bridging lines at top
and bottom chords where terminating at walls or beams.

Do not field cut or alter joist and joist girders without written
approval of manufacturer and
Owner
.

D.

FASTENING JOISTS

Field weld joist to supporting steel framework and/or preset bearing
plates as shown in accordance with SJI “
Standard
Specifications.”
Coordinate welding sequence and procedure with placement of
joists.

Set joists bearing on preset bear
ing plates on masonry or concrete
surfaces on grout bed and anchor to masonry or concrete
construction.

Provide unfinished threaded fasteners for bolted connections
except where high
-
strength bolts or welded connections are shown.

Do not install steel ro
of and/or floor decking until joists are bridged
and all connections are completed.

E.

FINISH PAINTING

Surface preparation and coatings are specified in Section 09900.
The factory/fabricator applied primer paint shall not be considered
to be part of the fi
nish painting system.
