CES 4702: Reinforced Concrete Structures
List three types of admixtures used in concrete and state specific reasons for using them.
Identify and discuss t
he main factors affecting the compressive strength of concrete.
Discuss the importance of the water
cement ratio in a concrete mix.
How is high
strength concrete typically produced? What is the role of the additional
ingredients used in a high
rength concrete mix?
Design a concrete mix to produce an approximate strength of 3 ksi given the following:
structure: concrete pavement
maximum aggregate size: ½ inch
fineness modulus of sand: 3.0
rodded weight of coarse aggregate: 100
moisture absorption: fine aggregate = 3.5% ; coarse aggregate = 2.5 %
A concrete mix is designed with proportions 1 : 1.9 : 2.8 by weight.
7 gallons of water per sack of cement is to be used.
Given excess moisture contents of 4% for sand
and 3% for stone,
(a) what is the concrete yield in cubic feet per sack of cement
(b) how much of each constituent material is needed for 50 cubic yards of concrete.
