II. Organizational Context

The UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for
the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the
empowerment of women; and the
achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human
rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the center of all its efforts, the
UN Women will l
ead and coordinate United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender
equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It will provide strong and
coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and e
fforts, building effective partnerships with
civil society and other relevant actors.

UN Women has recently finalized its first Strategic Note (SN) and Annual Work Plan (AWP)

for the years

2012

2013 in response to the need to re
-
align UN Women’s programmatic focus in Iraq in line with the
GOI’s national development priorities as outlined in the National Development Plan (“NDP” 2010
-
2014).

THE SN & AWP are also based on the opportunities
and challenges identified in the 2009 Common Country
Assessment (CCA) the priorities articulated in the United Nations Development Assistance Framework
(UNDAF) 2011
-
2014 to guide the work of the UNCT agencies in the country.

UN Women coordination role wit
hin UNCT and with partners in government and civil society in mainstreaming
gender and women’s issues is critical and cannot be undermined.
UN Women leads and coordinates the
overall efforts of the UN system to support the full realization of women’s right
s and opportunities. It provides
expertise on incorporating gender equality in the programmes of other UN organizations, and through regular
monitoring helps the UN system
is expected to
stay on top of its internal commitments to women. As the chair
of the

UNCT

Gender
Taskforce and the UNDAF Priority Working Group on Human Capital
, UN Women helps
orchestrate the efforts UN organizations to promote gender equality across the UN system.

The 2010 Open
Day on Women, Peace and Security held in Baghdad with vide
o link to Erbil, as one of 25 meetings
organized by DPKO, DPA,
UN Women
and UNDP, commended the establishment of UN Women and asked
