The research group Fluid M
echanics and Thermodynamics (Prof. dr. ir. Chris Lacor) of
the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Brussels, Belgium has an
opening for a PhD student
.


The Fluid Mechanics branch of the research group currently
employs
10 researchers
of
d
ifferent nationalities
of whom 8 on predoc and 2 on postdoc level. They
perform
research in the framework of

different national and international projects. The Fluid
Mechanics branch is internationally recognized and has

The emphasis of the research is on CFD with focus on Large Eddy
Simulation and scheme development and with applications to biological flows,
aeroacoustics, turbulent combustion, non

deterministic methods.

Nowadays Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has become an indispensable tool
in the design and development in ma
ny key sectors of economic life. Aiming at
shorter turnaround times from concept to market, new designs and pro
to
types are
more and more based on computer simulations. An important aspect is then the
accuracy of the design and its robustness with respect t
o uncertainties
. Within the

the VUB group developed a non
-
deterministic methodology

for CFD
,

based on polynomial chaos methods and
applied it

to aer
onaut
ical oriented applications such as the Rotor 37 testcase. An
intrusive approach was used and implemented within the Fine/Turbo code of
NUMECA Int.

The aim of the present PhD position is to further develop the methodology : the
treatment of many simultaneo
us uncertainties with

possibly different distributions

(as is the case in practice), the treatment of geometric uncertainties and the
accuracy in the neigbourhood of

strong gradients.

This is a quite challenging subject, of paramount interest and with m
any
opportunities for high level publications.

The candidate should have a

strong mathematical background and hold a
MA
degree
either
in engineering or in mathematics

or physics
. He should also
preferably
have good kno
wledge of Fortran and

practical exper
ience with it.
