COURSE GOALS:

This course will give students an understanding of the inventive nature of science, how
scientists develop verifiable evidence, and the ways in which scientific knowledge changes as new information
is gained through research and experimentation.
Students
will qualitatively and quantitatively analyze the
changes in motion of objects, forces acting on them and develop these analyses graphically as well as
algebraically. We will also study the interrelationships of energy and work as well as the nature of
sou
nd and
light
waves and
electromagnetic
fields
.

Assessment:
Assessment will be based on meeting the Dubuque Community School District Learning
Standards for
our learning objectives
. Class grade is based 60% on tests and quizzes
, 3
0% on
projects and
labs
,
and 10 % on homework
.
Grading rubrics on labs and projects will be an important way to set goals.
Work is
assessed on

a
20
-
point scale:

1
-
5

point
s

= demonstrates insufficient achievement

6
-
10

points = demonstrates basic achievement

11
-
15

points = demonst
rates proficient achievement

16
-
20

points = demonstrates achievement

that exceeds the proficient level

You must show work for problems. Credit will not be given for answers with no work. Your final
answer should be circled, squared, etc. This is for al
l assignments, labs, and assessments.

Units (cm, kg, lbs, etc.) should be used for all work (e.g. homework, labs, and tests). This will give you
confidence that your work was done correctly. On tests, units may be required for full credit if stated.

All written work must be done with a
pencil

and should be done in a neat manner. Neatness is a sign of
professionalism and is expected for a course of this level.

CONDUCT:

I expect you to BE PREPARED, TRY YOUR BEST, and BE RESPECTFUL and COURTEOUS.
Please talk with me or email me if you have problems.
My classroom rules are as follows:

Be respectful towards all members of the Dubuque Senior community

Be on time and prepa
red for class

Wait to be recognized by your instructor before speaking

Follow instructions the first time they are given

ATTENDANCE:

I expect students to be seated and prepared to work when the bell rings, and to stay seated
until I dismiss the class.
Otherwise, attendance policies are as stated in the Student Handbook. All students are
expected to be in class every day, and all missed work must be made up. Make
-
up sessions must be arranged
with the instructors and will usually be before or after school
.

HOMEWORK:
I will assign homework as needed. If students are working hard in class and mastering the
material then homework
may

be minimal.
The purpose of the hom
ework is to master the problem
-
solving
techniques and learn the vocabulary and concepts so
that
assessment scores will be as high as possible
.

The
amount of homework needed for practice may vary from student to student. The goal is for each student to learn
what they need to do in order to master the material.

I will collect homework on occasion

and give feedback.

PROJECTS:
Each quarter will feature a project
-
based learning unit. These units are used to assess whether a
student who is proficient also exceeds expectations.
Students may work individually or in groups, but all grades
will be indiv
idual.

LATE WORK:

Students who consistently hand in
lab and project
assignments on time will do well in this
course. Late assignments will receive
at most

half credit, which is a failing grade.

MATERIALS:

Students will need a calculator for this class
. Not having a calculator could affect your
grade.

Students
should

bring their text book, a folder, notepaper and a pen or pencil to class with them every
day unless I tell you otherwise.

LAB WORK:
Students may work in groups to carry out the lab, but e
ach individual must write up their lab on
their own. Plagiarism of another student’s lab write up will result in a grade of zero for BOTH students.

CHEATING:
I will not tolerate cheating of any kind. If I catch a student cheating, he or she will receive
a zero
for that assignment, quiz, test or exam.

TEACHER INFO:

I am in the office behind Room B241 most days by
7:00

a.m. and after school until 3 p.m.
Please call or email me to arrange a time to meet outside of these hours. My Prep period is Period 1, and you
can leave a message for me at 552
-
5632 and I will return your call as soon as possible. The best way to get a
hold of me is to email me at ggibbons@
