Speakers Biographies



Mike Casey

Dr. Mike Casey obtained
BSc

in Chemistry from UCC and PhD from Imperial College, London. He spent two
years as a
postdoc

at Columbia University in New York and was then appointed as a Lecturer at the
University of
Salford
.

He returned to Ireland in 1992 to take up a position in UCD, where he is now a Senior
Lecturer in Organic Chemistry. He has a strong interest in investigating non
-
traditional methods for
teaching.


JP Donnelly

JP Donnelly is a leading authority on branding and marketing communications, having worked on indigenous
and international brands in Ireland, UK and the United States.

JP is CEO of Ogilvy Group. He is a graduate
of UCD with a
BComm

and MBA.

He is also Chairman of WPP in Ireland, which is the largest procurer of
communications services in Ireland.

JP is a Board member of UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate School of
Business, and the Royal Victoria Eye & Ear Hospital.


He was formerly Chairman of the Marketing Institute
of Ireland, Honorary Secretary of UCDRFC and the Irish Universities.



Evelyn Doyle

Dr. Evelyn Doyle obtained a
BSc

in Microbiology from NUI Galway and completed a PhD in UCD on high
maltose producing amylases. After 4 years working as an industry
-
funded
postdoc
, she joined the staff of
the Department of Industrial Microbiology in UCD in 1990 and was Head of Department from 2002
-
2005.
Evelyn is Head of Teaching and Learning in the School of Biology and Environmental Science.



Helen Gallagher

Dr. Helen Gallagher is a Lecturer in the School of Medicine and Medical Science. One of her research and
teaching interests is the delivery of pharmaceutical care, which is inter
-
disciplinary by its nature and relies
on good working relationships between professionals. She has recently been awarded funding by the HRB to
conduct a Cochrane review contributing to a major worldwide umbrella review on the rational use of drugs.



Amanda Gibney

Dr. Amanda Gibney has worked as a structural design engineer in London where she worked on projects
such as the Lloyds Headquarters, Lords Cricket Ground, the Grand Louvre, Hong Kong Park Aviary, Bari
Football Stadium and Canary Wharf. Amanda returned to work in Dublin, joining UCD as a College
Lecturer.


Amanda is currently Vice Principal for Teaching and Learning in the College of Engineering,
Mathematical and Physical Sciences.



Paul McCabe

Dr. Paul McCabe is Head of Botany in the School of Biology and Environmental Science. He teaches courses
in cell biology, development and biotechnology. For the past 10 years he has been module coordinator for
BOTN 30130

'Plant Biotechnology'. This module stimulates an entrepreneurial spirit in undergraduates. The
structure and development of a business enterprise is examined and the students work in groups to prepare
a business plan to exploit a biotechnology venture.



Kathy O Boyle

Dr. O Boyle is a Senior Lecturer in the School of
Biomolecular

and Biomedical Science. Kathy is a former
Head of Subject for Pharmacology and is the School Head of Teaching and Learning. Kathy is currently
working on a university assessment project with UCD Centre for Teaching & Learning.



Jim Phelan

Professor Jim Phelan was educated at St Mary's
Knockbeg

College and UCD, prior to Joining UCD in 1982. His
teaching interests include the areas of research methods and rural development. He served as Head of
Department of Agribusiness and Rural Development from 1994 to 2003. He was appointed Dean of
Agricultural Sciences in
2007. Prof. Phelan also has a keen interest in development in Africa, particularly
Tanzania and has been involved on several missions in that country.
