Suggestions

for TIA to Conduct A Study

Within the Consumer Electron
ics (
ICT
) Industry to Discover the

Need for Product Performance Standards

1

Introduction

The
TR41.3
subcommittee is currently formulating plans for the standards that TR41.3
may
develop in the coming years. TR41.3 has discussed the fact that there is a significant increase in
the number of products being developed and sold that in addition to being used for telephony
purposes, serve dual roles as multimedia devices. For this
rea
son
, TR41

would like the scope of
this
investigation to include all
ICT
(Information Communication Technology)
or CE

(Consumer
Electronics)
products which may be used for communicating

sound
,

images
, or video

whether
the communication is for “person
-
to
-
person” (e.g., a telephone call)
,
“product
-
to
-
person” (e.g.,
media

player)
, or “person
-
to
-
product” (e.g., voice recognition)
.

TR41
’s

goal in providing this document to TIA management is to request T
IA to help TR41

members to gain insights and information into the current needs of the
ICT

or CE
industry for
product performance standards that would be used by

developers, manufacturers, and

buyers
of
ICT

or CE

products.

2

Motivations

TR41

members
have several different motivations for embarking on a project to investigate the
need for
ICT

or CE
product performance standards.
B
elow is a non
-
exhaustive list of
motivations described
by

TR41

members w
hen

asked the question of why they would like
i
nformation from the
ICT

or CE
industry regarding the need for standards and the potential for
TR41

to initiate new standards development projects to address these needs.

1)

Goals for TIA member companies

a.

Increased product sales

b.

Better product performance

i.

Higher customer satisfaction

ii.

Lower return rates

iii.

Interoperability

c.

Provide documented information for buyers (retail, institutional) to educate on
the important performance parameters.

d.

Help company sales organizations to protect current sales
relationships related
to claims of product performance.

3

Project Concept:
ICT

Industry Questionnaire

TR41

has an initial concept to develop a questionnaire that T
I
A management would use to
circulate to
ICT

buyers

to obtain answers to the question raised. The responses to these
questions will be used by TR41

to guide the nature of the new standards
development project
s

TR41

may undertake.

This section documen
ts some of the concepts TR
41

has developed
for
this project.
