This course explains the principles of traffic control and access control lists (ACLs) and
provides an overview of
the services and protocols at the data link layer for wide
-
area access.
Describes user access technologies and devices and discover how to implement and
configure Point
-
to
-
Point Protocol (PPP), Point
-
to
-
Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE), DSL,
and Frame
Relay. WAN security concepts, tunneling, and VPN basics are introduced. Discuss
the special network services required by converged applications and an introduction to quality
of service (QoS
)


Course Rationale:


This course covers both the essential and th
e fundamental concepts in data communications.
Materials covered prepare the student to develop knowledge to begin implementation of a local area
network and manual skills necessary to construct a local area network.

other material pertinent to the course


Evaluation

more than 30 minutes. They will come from the on

line text, class lectures, and the lab material.


Final Exam:


The final exam will be comprehensive and completed on

Make Up Quizzes:

A student is responsible for any work missed r
egardless of the cause of the absence. A student
absent on official college business will not be penalized and is entitled to make up missed work. The
student must report the school related absence at least one week prior to the absence. Immediately

n returning to school, the student is expected to discuss make

up work immediately upon his/her
return. If the student does not appear at the prearranged time for make

up work, the student forfeits
the right for further make

up of that work.

Classroom Policies

Students are expected to assist in maintaining a positive environment that is conducive to learning.
Inappropriate or distractive classroom behavior is prohibited in order to ensure that everyone has an
opportunity to gain from time spent in class.
If a student’s behavior is deemed inappropriate, the
faculty member in charge for either a temporary or permanent basis may remove that student from
the class. This ensures that the student with commitment will be able to harvest the fruits of his/her

nvestment in the class. Students have the right to appeal through the appropriate channels.


Attendance

Kilgore College requires punctuality and regular class attendance. An absence is defined, as a
student’s not being in class. An instructor may drop a

student when lack of attendance
prohibits the student from meeting course objectives or when the student has excessive
absences.


Excessive absences
” is defined as two weeks of instruction in a long term or four days in a

summer term.

Two weeks of absenc
es translates as follows:

(1)

a class that meets one hour a week


two hours,

(2)

a class that meets three hours a week


6 hours,

(3)

a class that meets four hours a week


8 hours.

It is the responsibility of the instructor to inform the students of the attendance
policy at the
beginning of each long semester or summer term.
