Helpful Installation Tips for Dealer Training:

Site Visit

+ Client Awareness
:

-

Ensure that client understands system and any complications that might occur on installation
day

-

Inform the client of fan box, ducting, size and location of supply and return
holes, grill sizes and
maintenance issues

Mounting
:

-

Measure outside dimensions of panel array and mark out on house

sometimes helpful to
remove siding material an extra ½ inch to make panels easier to mount within opening and to
make trimming easier aro
und panel array

-

Cut mounting rails approximately 2 inches shy from each edge to ensure that panels mount
easily

-

Pre
-
drill holes for rail fasteners in spline on outside of collector (makes mounting easier)

general guideline

one screw per foot

-

Cut holes
through exterior wall

one inch larger than ducting diameter to allow enough room
for high temperature insulation

-

When cutting notches in the back of the collectors for the rails to span multiple collectors, cut
top notch even with outside edge, and cut
bottom notch at a slightly lower than the bottom of
mounting slot (ensure easier mount if it isn’t a tight fit)

Cutting
s
upply and
r
eturn
h
oles in the home:

-

Check/recheck for wires and piping (drill through wall with long bit first, then small hole so yo
u
can reach a hand into opening to feel for any obstacles

Cutting supply and return holes in back of collectors:

-

These holes can not be patched easily, so check and recheck position of holes from mounting
rails, then measure from rail slots on back of col
lector

-

When cutting hole in backsheet of collector for snap disk, make sure bit doesn’t extend beyond
1 inch past the aluminum sheathing. If it is too far, the bit will cut into the back of the absorber
plate

Ducting:

-

Make sure ducting through exterior wal
l is secure into starting collar

silicon and hold in place

-

Flex duct helps to muffle fan noise, when possible, use small piece after fan and before supply
register

-

Check and recheck direction of fan and dampers

-

Place damper closest to outside of
exterior wall

-

When ready to connect ducting to the back of collectors, have a plan for how you are going to
maneuver snap disk, high temp insulation, ducting, and flex conduit

if you don’t think through,
you might forget a step and have to disassemble an
d backtrack

-

Snap disk wires must extend at least 6 inches past the flex conduit for mounting to junction box

Mounting fan:

-

When screwing mounting brackets onto fan, make sure you do not unscrew the fan screws all
the way, only loosen them until you can sl
ide the mounting bracket onto the fan

-

Ensure that ducting is secured to fan with screws and aluminum taping

-

Keep in mind that electrician must be able to access the wire casing on fan box

try to leave as
accessible as possible

Finishing Up:

-

Check and r
echeck any needs for caulking and silicon on exterior side of collectors (bronze
silicon the gap between the collectors and sheets of glass)

-

Ensure that ducting and fan are thoroughly insulated and sealed

-

Leave a thermostat for electrician to mount when he
/she arrives
