Comparison

The
two texts that I

chose to
compare

are ‘Vibes
-

Jigsaw,’ a fiction book and ‘DNA and Genetic
Engineering,’ a non
-
fiction book.

To begin with, here are some similarities and differences

between the two texts.

SIMILARITIES

DIFFERENCES

They both talk about engineering genes

One is fiction the other is not

Both sources

mention the
casualties

of
experiments

The non
-
fiction book has

contents

The fiction book has a story line

Both have
some sort of a plot

The fiction book has characters

They both needed some level of research

The non
-
fiction book has lots of pictures

You learn something from both books

Mentions real

life issues in the non
-
fiction
book, make believe

issues

in the fiction
book

Both books contain some fact

I believe the author of my fiction book, Christine Harris, had to research many topics. Some of these I
believe included amnesia, genetic engineering and statistics. Amnesia; because the story revolves

around
a girl with amnesia.
Genes and genetic engineering;
because the gi
rl is part of a ‘super race’ that

was
made by genetic engineering. Finally, I think that Christine Harris would’ve had to research some
statistics, for example in the book it quotes
‘the average person passes wind
fifteen

times a day.’

This research made the story deeper in many ways. The research about amnesia made the story more
realistic
because it enabled the author t
o

accurately describe the
after
-
effects

of

amnesia. The genetic
research made the story believable because it made the end seem very real. The statistics were good
because it added some interesting, true facts to the story.

The information I found on genetic engineering did support my fiction text because I believe tha
t it might
almost be possible to create the ‘super race’. That is if you can find the right gene(s) and if the right
gene(s) exists. I don’t, even after reading the book, know if that gene(s) exists.

It made me appreciate
how smart

both the fictional chara
cter
that

made the new race and the people in real life
that h
ave or are
working on genetic engineering.

I believe that research will help my own writing in several situations. One is when I am writing a story on,
say, World War II. If
I

researched situati
ons such as war hospitals, air raids etc. my story wi
ll be more
realistic
. Another situation that it wou
ld be helpful in would be when I

am writing a persuasive text.
Research will be beneficial in that situation because of

I research related statistics I

will make it more
persuasive since the statistics are real.
