Using the influence line from the previous homework (problem 6.63),design member BC using a
steel W-section.
 Assume A992 steel (F

= 50 ksi,F

= 65 ksi).
 The member will be bolted through the flanges with 7/8-inch bolts.
 Use a shear lag factor of U = 0.85.
 Design the member based on a Type 3 Vehicle (shown below).This is the live load.The
bridge must be able to support two of these trucks—either following each other (with four feet
of separation) or traveling in opposite directions:whichever is worse.
 The dead load on member BC is 18 kip in tension.
 As in your homework problem,half of the load is transferred to each truss.
