SEO

Create a new Word document to record your actions. Analyze
http://www.cascadelakes.com/

for
search engine optimization. Using small screen captures or snips and typed text/markup,
document the following...

1.

Does Cascade Lakes have a meta description? Whether they do or not, write up a good
meta description around 200 characters for this site
that emphasizes appropriate
keywords.

Cascade Lakes home page does not have a meta description. This is evident in the source
code, as well as in the search results page:

You can see on this SERP listing the text below the page URL (in green). I am not s
ure
where on the site this text is coming from. Usually, if no meta description is entered, the
search engine will grab a piece of text from the page
that
the search engine
choses
. I
looked at the source code and could not find a snippet of this text makin
g me believe the
text came from some other page
(probably the About page)
. Regardless

of where the text
came from
, the text could be customized to the site developer’s desires with a meta
description tag, but this tag is not present.

2.

Are there any interna
l styles or scripts being used that could be placed on an external
file(s).

There is a Facebook script towards the bottom of the page that probably could be placed
in an external file (actually, this script probably handles all of the social media icons at

the bottom of the page). This script is followed by internal styles that could be placed in
an external file. The internal styles are for the social media followed by styles, most
likely for the whole page. I do see Google Analytics JavaScript tag. I beli
eve this script
needs to be internal to properly function. This whole page has a mix of internal and
external scripts.

3.

Find two images on the home page you feel have weak alt attributes. provide

examples
for better alt text for the two images you picked.

All of the images in the picture shown below have the same alt tag of “All the details”.
Yet, each image is different. One is of Bingo. Maybe the alt tag could say something
about “bingo”. The
“View all the Events” image should have alt text that says “View all
the events” rather than “All the details.” “Project X” could say something about “Project
X” whatever that is.

4.

Does cascade lakes have a custom 404 page? If so, provide the URL.

T
here is a custom 404 error page:

This 404 error page could be much better with an HTML site map on the page rather than
a search box to search the site.

The URL of the 404 error page is not shown because the address bar is retaining the
address the user

entered. This is so the user can see what address they entered vs. the
address of the 404 error page (see the picture).

5.

Does cascade lakes have a robots.txt file? If so, provide the URL.

Yes, the URL is
http://www.cascadelakes.com/robots.txt
.

6.

Create a sitemap.xml for cascade lakes over at xml
-
sitemaps.com. Take a screen shot of
the resulting xml file (after opening it with your html editor).

7.

Is cascade lakes

using headings and paragraphs in a good manner on their home page?
Find some samples of text content on the home page and rework it using headings and
paragraph tags in a way that emphasizes ideal keywords.

It would seem that the text “Bingo at Cascade La
kes Lodge” or “Project X” would be
headline tags, but they are not. Rather they are using <div> tags for this information.
Here is an image of the source code of “Bingo at Cascade Lakes Lodge”:

There are no headline tags on this page. The “Cascade Lakes
Brewing Company” logo at
top of the page is an image. Some sort of image replacement technique could be used to
still allow the image along with text inside of an <h1> tag.

They could have an <h2> tag for “beers sold” or something similar with information

below introducing those beers with text links to sub
-
pages with more detail.

There is little text on this page, and what does exist is at the bottom of the page rather
than the top of the page. In SEO, the most important text should be higher up in the code
of the page. In this case, it is below the fold, so the user doesn’t see it

unless they scroll a
bit. The text higher on the page is about events coming up (less important than talking
about the company and its products, services, and location.

The current text at the bottom of the page is:

Founded in 1994, Cascade Lakes Brewing

Company began as a small scale brewing facility in an
airport industrial zone in Redmond, OR. Seventeen years and a whole lot of great beers later,
operations have expanded to include five restaurants in Central Oregon to satisfy the area's
thirst for tas
ty craft beers. They include Seventh Street Brew House, Red Dog Depot, Tumalo
Tavern, Cascade West Grub and Alehouse, and our flagship restaurant in Bend, OR, Cascade
Lakes Lodge. Cascade Lakes uses a brand new 25 bbl (775 gallon) JV Northwest brewing syst
em
for all of its hand crafted ales.

My guess is that Cascade Lakes Brewing Company could include some keywords about
beers, pubs, and the company name more on the home page. It could be changed

to the
name of the company first
:

I highlighted a lot of relevant keywords, but there is not a specific focus on only a few
highest valued keywords on this home page. I am not so worried about this as I would use
the keywords in the text they cu
rrently have to link to sub
-
pages with the relevant link
text. For example, “restaurant” could be a link to a page about the company’s restaurants.
The term “brewing facility” could be link text to a page about their brewing facilities.
These pages would b
ecome potential landing pages. If other keywords should be
emphasized, the text should be revised to introduce them off the home page. Effective
SEO uses the home page to introduce the top keywords on the home page with text links
to sub
-
pages.

8.

What are th
e three 2
-
word phrases that have the greatest keyword density at cascasde
lakes? include a screen shot. What 2
-
word phrases do you think would be better? Provide
at least two examples based on how you would search for information.

On
this page
, the top 2
-
w
ord phrases are:

Cascade lakes

Lakes lodge

Tumulo tavern

Maybe

better if they used
:

Redmond brewery

Bend beers

Redmond restaurant

or Redmond pub

I would be wise to do keyword research at Google Adwords Keyword Tool
https://adwords.google.com/

with searching for keyword traffic related to similar
keywords.

Also, it would be wise to see what keywords are bringing visitors to the site as reported in
Google Analytics or Google We
bmaster Tools.

9.

What type of content would you suggest cascade lakes put on their home page and web
site that would keep visitors returning. Be specific in your suggestions. Provide at least 2
ideas.

Their top level navigation includes “beers”, “pubs” and they probably have “restaurants.” I
would speak about these terms to match what they have in their navigation. If these are not the
best terms, maybe “brewery”. They need some text (200 words to 400 w
ords) about these topics
with text links to these sub
-
pages. These text links reinforce the navigation links.

They could use an events sub
-
page with a link from the home page to that. Visitors would likely
want to see the new events.

A similar feature co
uld be “specials” that are being offered for visitor to check out.

A calendar would be helpful to post events.

Maybe recent pictures from cool events could be rotated on the home page in an interesting
manner. Visitors might want to see those pictures. T
he same could be done with videos.
