Cataloging Department

GOAL 1

To

be actively engaged with the FIU community and our local and global partners

Objective

Milestone
s

Department Activities

Outcomes

1.A Enhance and expand access to
unique collections of local and
global interest, such as the Digital
Library of the
Caribbean (dLOC) and
the Everglades Digital Library.

AY13
-
14

Milestone 1:
Provide access to streaming audio and
video content.

Milestone 2:
Recruit additional partners to
contribute metadata and/or content to the
Everglades discovery system.

Added Milest
one 3: Seek training for the cataloging
of cartographic materials
.

Added Milestone 4: Seek training so that additional
staff and librarians are able to contribute to the
Name Authority Component (NACO) of the
Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) of

the
Library of Congress and consequently to contribute
to the Virtual International Authority File (VIAF).

Added Milestone 5: Use the newly implemented
content standard, Resource Description and Access
(RDA), for contributions to international
cooperativ
e databases.

Identify
streaming audio and video
content

and catalog it.

Identify
additional partners

and
contact them about using their
metadata.

Identify webinars and trainers so that
librarians and staff can learn to
catalog
maps

using the new
cataloging standard:
R
esource
D
escription and
A
ccess
.

Determine the most efficient as well
as cost effective way to broaden
participation in the creation of NACO
records

bring in an outside trainer;
combine use of outside trainers and
webcasts; or use online instruction
with local training
.

FIU Catalogers

continue to catalog
and process print books, e
-
books & e
-
videos, serials and all other formats.

More
streaming audio and video content

is available
from the library catalog.

The metadata from more partners is available
through the
Everglades

discovery system
.

Maps in the
Maps and

Imagery Users Services unit
and
in Special Collections

are available through the
library catalog
.

More names have officially established forms so that
usage in the library catalog is uniform and is
consequently

easier for users to differentiate people
and organizations with similar names.

Cataloging

will achieve the following goals:

Contribute at least 450 original bibliographic
records to OCLC WorldCat

Contribute at least 250 revised or new name
authority r
ecords to NACO/VIAF

Contribute at least 50 revised or new series
headings to VIAF/NACO

Contribute at least 25 new literary author
numbers to VIAF/NACO

Contribute at least 2 new subject headings to
SACO, the Subject Authority Component of the
PCC.

Added Milestone 6: Work with staff from the
Florida Virtual Campus (FLVC) to manage the
bibliographic records for FIU’s local User Based
Collection Management project.

Added Milestone 7: Work with staff from FLVC and
statewide
colleagues to coordinate the
management of the bibliographic records for the
statewide Patron Driven Acquisitions project.

Added Milestone 8: Continue to cooperate with
statewide cataloging colleagues to clean up and
report duplicate bibliographic records

remaining in
the merged database of the State University
Libraries (SULs).

Added Milestone 9: Contribute to the
establishment and maintenance of consistent
forms of terms

names, subjects, and titles

to be
used as headings in the bibliographic records in
the
statewide shared database of the State University
Libraries (SULs)

Added Milestone 10: C
atalog locally produced
LibGuides, if requsted by I&RS Librarians or the E
-
Resources Working Group.

W
ork with FLVC to profile the load of
the records into Mango but not into
Aleph; if FLVC cannot do the Mango
load in a reasonable timeframe, load
the records ourselves into Aleph.

Meet with relevant technical services
staff (cat, acq & serials) to make sure
they can recognize the status code
and the ticklers for the project a
nd to
develop

guidelines for the project.

Monitor relevant listservs and
GoogleDocs to report and resolve
duplication records.

Confer with University of Florida
catalogers and other statewide
colleagues on the most strategic use
of staff resources and
how the work
might be shared with other libraries as
time permits.

Allocate staff so that FIU can keep up
with our share of the work.

Research practices of other university
libraries; develop workflow and assign
staff to project.

FIU stude

FIU technical services staff will not order e
-
books that
the state plans to purchase for all SULs.

The shared SUL database will have fewer duplicates
and will thus be less confusing to users.

Catalogers from FIU and the

University of Florida
may cease to process all the 7 weekly reports
purchased from the Library of Congress and
formatted for
the
state university database by
FLVC.

Other state university

libraries
may be able to
assist with the work
as time permits.

FIU catalogers will r

Objective

Milestone

Department Activities

Outcomes

2.C. Develop and implement plans to
better align library
space and
facilities with student learning needs
and study habits.

Added Milestone 1: As space needs drive the shifting
of collections, continue to process the materials
being transferred by subject liaisons from the
reference to the circulating collectio

Added Milestone 2: As space needs drive the
weeding of collections, continue to process the
materials being withdrawn by subject liaisons from
both the reference collection and the circulating
collections.

Added Milestone 3: Coordinate w
ith the Collection
Development Officer to pack and ship boxes of
withdrawn books to Better World Books.

Added Milestone 4: Coordinate with Information
and Research Services librarians to withdraw
deteriorated microform collections and to see that
they ar
e disposed of safely.

Added Milestone 5: Finalize the new withdrawal
policies and procedures which conform to the
reporting requirements of the Office of the
Controller.

Added Milestone 6: See that monthly reports of
withdrawn OCO materials are sent to P
roperty
Control in the Office of the Controller.

P
rocess the materials being
transferred
.

Process the materials being
withdrawn so that they are
withdrawn from both the local library
catalog and from WorldCat.

Follow the guidelines to select
acceptable materials for BWB; pack
boxes and participate in pick up
activities.

on just one person.

Users have accurate location information as to
where materials are now shelved.

expanding the digital research
environment using the institutional
repository and digital library
infrastructure to
reframe the

wo
rkflow to digitize historical FIU theses and
dissertations.

Work with other department to
refine already established metadata
workflows.

Work in coordination
with UTS,
Special Collections, the DCC and

for the
digitiz
ation of

historical FIU theses and
dissertations; add PURLs to the bib
records of T & D’s that the Libraries
retain; re

Users of the library catalog know which T & D’s are
available in hard copy and which are available
electronically.

Objective

access and visualization of library and
Internet
-

Look for opportunities
for training in
the use of known software
, protocols
and schemas

and
to
l
ook for
information about new software,
protocols and

schemas.

FIU becomes known as the place to go for a broad
spectrum of Everglades
materials from multiple
partner
s.

Staff are prepared to

assist FIU and the SUL in the

4.E. Migrate library metadata in legacy
systems to prepare for the
implementation of next
-
generation
systems currently under development.

Added Milestone 1: Continue
work on
Diaz
-
Ayala
Collection
.

Continue migration and clean

up

of
local Diaz
-
Ayala metadata records.

A second batch of 300 A & B sides will be
cleaned up
; this will result in an additional 150

The metadata in this batch will be edited so that
it conforms to the newly implemented
cataloging standard,
R
esource Description and
Access

(RDA).

The crosswalk will be revised so that future
batches of crosswalked metadata will conform
to RDA standards.

When Systems is able to generate PURLs, they
will be added to the newly created batch of
MARC records in the l

database before they are uploaded into the
OCLC database.

PURLs will also be added to the completed first
batch of MARC records in the local library
catalog database and in the OCLC database.

Cataloging and the DCC will work together

related digital content.

If time permits and if training becomes available,
name authority records will be created for the
composers and performers in the collection
.

The ongoing decisions about policies and
procedures will be posted on the departmental
webpage.
