8.3 Transistors

Transistors are control devices that amplify small inputs into large inputs. These consist
of semiconductors joined together, like diodes. There are two types of transistors the p
-
n
-
p type
and the n
-
p
-
n type.

The sem
iconductor making up the centre section is called the base and is very thin. The
outer semiconductors are the emitter (the thinner side) and the collector (the thicker one).

On the left, the transistor is like a p
-
n diode with a forward bi
as. The right side is like an n
-
p
diode connected in reverse bias. When the collector current begins, the voltage output in the
collector circuit will be greater than the voltage input in the emitter.
