FRONT PAGE NEWS

Hi everyone!

This week, we have a new vers
ion of one of our 'Living & Learning' tools for you

a pocket
-
size
version of our 'Science to Spirit Ring' (shown above) that is small enough to be printed onto a
business card and carried in a wallet wherever you go!

Long
-
term followers of Sambiglyon's
work may recall that the 'Science to Spirit Ring' was a
problem
-
solving tool that could be used to work out solutions to challenges with philosophical /
metaphysical elements to them that could not be solved easily through scientific methodology
alone. Th
is mini version of the Ring drops the half of the ring that deals with location
-
based
problem analysis in order to make it easier to use and more portable and focuses on the
mechanism for either simplifying or constructing theories for how something might
work. You can
read more about the full
-
sized version of the Ring at:

http://sambiglyon.org/?q=node/286

We can quickly summarize the operating principles of the Ring by quoting from the above article:
“[Users] can find the layer [of the Ring] that their

idea fits into at its current stage of development
and can then work their way clockwise or anticlockwise along the ring to plan what stages they
need to go through next to either make their idea more complex and therefore acceptable to a
professional aud
ience or easier for anybody to understand. The entire process is deliberately
designed to be similar to a science
-
fiction matter transportation 'beaming' device which can either
turn loose, unformed energy into a collection of atoms and then a physical ob
ject or break that
complexly structured solid object down into extremely simple energy.”

A primary reason why a business
-
card sized format is ideal for a portable form of this tool is that
the user does not have to extend their thumb far inwards over the
surface of the card in order to be
able to freely slide the thumb of one hand against the symbols on the Ring whilst holding the edge
of the card with the fingers (and thus keeping it firmly still). The other hand, meanwhile, is free to
move up and down t
he Slider on the opposite side of the card without holding onto the edge on
that side (making utilization of the card similar to how a smartphone is simultaneously held and
touched).

We have also produced a version of the tool for left handed people! Lef
t
-
to open the image in a new browser window and then use the Save Image option to save it to your
computer for printing later.

LEFT HANDED

http://bit.ly/KYqNF2

RIGHT HANDED

http://bit.ly/LWxNAm

Note the checkered pattern inside

the ring. This is not simply there for the sake of decoration: if
the user wishes, they can cut out this section of the card with a pair of scissors so that they can
overlay the card over the top of a photo ID card or any other favorite wallet sized pict
ure held
underneath (e.g a family member, friend or pet) and in doing so instantly add the functionality of
Sam's 'Personal Settings Slider' tool to the card.

The 'Personal Settings Slider':

http://sambiglyon.org/?q=node/281

This feature can be enhance
d further if the cut card is laminated, making it both more durable and
still able to display through the plastic any card / picture placed beneath it. Yet another possibility
that cutting and laminating provides is to use the card as a tool to break down

complex information
on a book page into more manageable bite
-
sized chunks by overlaying the card on a section of a
page that you want to focus exclusively on and then moving the card around to display the next
section of information beneath the see
-
throug
h area.

We very much hope that the pocket Ring tool will be useful to you and those that you know, live
and work with. Let us know about any success stories you have with the tool at the usual contact
addresses!

THIS WEEK'S FLEET GOLDENBERG 'DEVELOPER DIARY' HIGHLIGHTS ON FACEBOOK

* Via Massively: Roblox CEO David Baszucki talks blocks, building, and learning through play.

http://bit.ly/KcOg8y

-----------------------------------------------
----------------------------

* We'd like to remind our Second Life rent box leasing customers that on June 15, rental price rate
increases will come into effect for leasing customers who joined us prior to January 2012. All
customers who became tenants

after that date are already on the 2012 price rate and will not see
a further increase.

The new rates were introduced in January but delayed for a 6 month period for existing rent
-
box
tenants in order to help them to prepare for the change. The rise is
modest
-

for example, a L$810
a week property becomes L$860
-

but we realize that any increase is undesirable in this economic
climate. Those existing box
-
based customers can delay the effects of the rise by pre
-
loading
advance time credit onto their box
at the 2011 price rate before June 15.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

* I was looking at Hawaii on Google Earth and suddenly noticed that the GE map of Hawaii looks
like an Alsatian / German Shepherd dog!

h
ttp://bit.ly/JKj931

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

* There are some ideas you consider that sound fantastic on paper but crumple a bit once you
give them some further thought. One of these 'great in theory'

ideas was to run all of the US
states' budgets through a Sam's budget analysis system and come up with suggestions for fixing
the budgets. It was going to be called 'Solution for America'. The point at which I filed it in the
trash can was when I realiz
ed that politicians don't listen to good ideas if they don't coincide with
their pet projects! [end of cynical line] [also, end of rubbish Tron references]

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

* I'm listening to
my music tracks at the moment while writing the newsletter editorial (update: the
one you've just read). Anyway, I was trying to think of the wording for a section and then the
Ulysses 31 sci fi cartoon theme kicked in. "ULYSSES! ULY
-
SEE
-
HEES! SOARING TH
ROUGH
ALL THE GA
-
LAX
-
EE
-
EES!". And then the words that I needed came to me. Eighties cartoon
themes were wonderfully inspiring (Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors might have had a similar
effect had it been in my ears at the time) :)

Like newspaper writing
, the choice of subject for the editorial is often settled on at short notice,
depending on what ideas come to the fore as deadline approaches and whether one idea is more
suitable for the front page than another. In a parallel universe somewhere, the lat
est editorial is
about the Real Ghostbusters and their proton packs (I assure you all that there was a relevant
reason for considering this as a Sam newsletter topic!)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

* Since
I started reading Club Penguin Magazine for 8
-
12 kids market research (in addition to the
Moshi Monsters Magazine I've read since last November for the same purposes), I find that silly
little catchphrases from CP get stuck in my head. Like pinky penguin
lady DJ Cadence's 'Woot
woot!' and 'Lolz!'. If it can embed itself in me, heaven knows how many kids are running around
shouting these phrases! Speaking of Moshi, you can legally and officially download issue 1 of the
Moshi magazine for free from here:

http://bit.ly/Jys179

If you like the teaser issue and are a US / Canada resident who would like to purchase the
magazine for your darling child, you can buy it from www.moshimagusa.com and have it delivered
to your door as a subscription print magazine (a
lbeit without the free gifts UK purchasers get, but
you can live without those as the really good stuff is in the form of codes inside the mag!)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

* I went to the outdoor market
in town this morning and picked up a couple of cheap dvds. One
was the British comedy set in war
-
time England, 'Dad's Army', and the other was the iconic 90's
virtual reality movie 'The Lawnmower Man'. Nice mix of history and and futurism, if the future
of
virtual reality was going to involve avatars from a Commodore Amiga game (the following image
has been edited for safeness at work):

http://bit.ly/KQBCsv

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

* Via YouTube: “Fo
r the last two years the Sauber F1 Team mechanics have been using their
downtime to slice a Formula One racing car lengthwise down the middle with the precision of true
craftsmen. Chief Designer Matt Morris quite literally gets underneath the skin of the
F1 car,
pointing out where and how the individual components are located within the chassis. Everything
is packed in pretty tightly. Sergio Pérez is also on hand to demonstrate the driver's seating
position.”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Wn1EFLa2C8

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

* One of the weaknesses of Second Life's design is that you cannot see visual previews of your
inventory items, and such a feature does not seem to be in third party viewer soft
ware either. Then
something occurred to me
-

if you drag an item out of inventory and drop it on your avatar's back
then it rezzes as an attachment that waves around in front of you. You don't even need to own
land in order to rez the item on the surface

of your avatar. If you want to remove the item then you
can just right
-
click on it and select 'Detach or do so with a right
-
click in the item's name in the
inventory'. It might be a good technique for absolute beginners recently arrived in SL.

---------
------------------------------------------------------------------

* To encourage participation in Sambiglyon's website usability survey, we are offering the incentive
of a prize draw for two prizes of a code that can be redeemed for $20 worth of online
-
service
purchase points for the console platform of your choice (Nintendo Points, Sony PSN or Microsoft
Xbox Live). Previous participants in the survey before this date will also be put into the draw.
Winners can gift the code to friends and family if th
ey wish. Staff and associates of Sam are
excluded from the draw in order to ensure fairness, of course. Points can be supplied for use on
UK, European or US consoles. You can find the survey at:

http://sambiglyon.org/survey

----------------------------
-----------------------------------------------

* We have adjusted the terms of Sambiglyon's Second Life 'Object Insurance' benefit so that it is
now available as standard to all pay
-
contract land leasers. The free plan replaces lost or damaged
SL item
s up to a maximum value of L$4,000 ($15 USD). To qualify for the plan, tenants need
simply to register a list of their objects with Sambiglyon prior to them being lost / damaged, just like
a real
-
world insurance policy. We hope this will help to encourage

people who are uncertain about
trying out virtuality to give it a chance, reassured that they have a safety cushion if something goes
wrong on their land! If you would like further details of the plan, get in touch with us.

FRONT PAGE NEWS

Hi everyone!

It is a tendency of humans to attribute some of the events in their life to pure chance. A

wide range
of sayings has even built up around a belief in randomness, such as “What were the chance of that
happening?” and “I was born lucky”. But what if randomness only
-
appears
-

to be random? If the
mind knows the factors that affect chance then it

may be able to automatically develop processing
steps to alter chance. Whether the mind affects chance positively or negatively probably depends
though on whether the person believes themselves to be lucky, as the mind will usually default to
the program
ming that it is most often exposed to.

An example of this may be soul
-
mates, two random numbers in the Universe who 'lock on' to each
other's number and are drawn together. The closer the pair of numbers get to each other, the more
that randomness decr
eases until finally they meet. Other popular applications that could arise from
taking the randomness out of random include lotteries, card draws, weather manipulation and the
prediction of particle positions (useful for transporter technology, Trek fans!
)

What set me on the path of exploring this subject was, as has happened frequently, a flash of
inspiration provided by fiction. In this case, it was a part of the final episode of the original version
of the card
-
dueling Japanese anime 'Yu
-
Gi
-
Oh', in w
hich one of the main characters (Atem the
Pharaoh) knows precisely what card he will be drawing next, because his will is dictating it. There
is not a YouTube clip to illustrate it, but you can read a transcript of this part of the episode at
http://bit.l
y/JRDzli

Whilst I was at university, the psychology department ran a public experiment where they placed a
machine in the library lobby that asked you to press a button to select whether a head or tails coin
toss would be generated, the aim being to test
whether there was evidence of people having pre
-
cognitive psychic ability. Rather than rely on chance or use precognition, I took an alternative
approach.

I visualized a tails toss being represented by a binary '0' number and heads by a '1' and then
be
fore pressing the 'guess button', I would fix an image of a '0' or '1' in my mind depending on what
I wanted the outcome of the toss to be and believed that the machine's selection should by
influenced by my will.

The psychologists had stated in the mac
hine's instructions that a normal rate of successful
prediction should be 1 in 4 attempts (even though with only two possible outcomes available, it
should be 1 in 2 under perfect conditions

but humans aren't perfect!) Using this visualization
technique
, I lowered the odds to an average of 1 in 2. I shared my findings with the psychology
department by email. I didn't get a reply!

If chance could be expressed as a measurable scientific force then that would suggest that
exerting an influence on 'force
carrier' particles like bosons could alter events in your favour. This
concept is represented visually by the Marvel comic book mutant character Longshot, who emits a
field from his body that affects chance. Incan shamen also believe that blueprints in a
person's
spiritual energy field exert an influence on how events external to the body unfold. If this sounds
unlikely, remember that different people and different medias can often represent the same
universal insight in varying forms.

Once one understa
nds how the mind can affect chance then it becomes possible to begin
considering how those processes could be converted into random
-
variable tracking software that
performs the same functions. Anything at all can be turned into binary numbers, as math is
a
universal language. Microsoft's Kinect motion
-
tracking technology already has some capability to
extrapolate the positions of objects that its cameras cannot see within its visual range. Because of
the size that objects scanned by Kinect's sensors need

to be in order to be registered though, it
obviously cannot see particles.

But since computer
-
controlled detectors that can display particle movement tracks on a screen
already exist in particle research machinery such as the Large Hadron Collider, per
haps consumer
tracking hardware like Kinect could be adapted to project these particles as non see
-
through
holographic people in motion (rendering a cloud of colliding particles as a crowd of colliding
humans!) so that the software could make predictions i
n real
-
time about their upcoming positions.
A name for something that takes the randomness out of random numbers could be an 'actuator',
because one is turning the numbers into what they actually are instead of what they might be.

As exciting as all this

sounds, however, there are also equal arguments in favour of randomness in
some applications, because it is through random, unexpected occurrences that evolution occurs
and new possibilities come to light. Without an element of chaos, humanity would stan
d still and
stagnate (not to mention that life would be terribly dull if every variable was predictable and
controllable). Sometimes, there is a lot to be said for letting Lady Luck be in the driving seat!

* I was watching a GTA IV 'aerial city tour' YouTube video (as I sometimes do for inspiration about

* Like most creative folk, I was influenced by the

media that I experienced whilst growing up. As
regular readers of my writings will know, the beginnings of my work in developing potential
maximization techniques were inspired by the Japanese animated series 'Dragonball Z'. The main
character Goku's sig
nature special move in that series was an energy beam fired from two hands
held close together that was called the 'Kamehameha Wave' (presumably after the Hawaiian ruler
King Kamehameha).

Over the years, I figured out the mechanics of the Kamehameha (than
ks to my engineering
degree, funnily) ... and then I was reminded of an age old life lesson about mastering the
fundamentals of a subject first. Because I found I could only harness enough potential to warm my
palms up nicely. Still, I keep trying and ac
hieving a bit more. I might release enough potential to
heat a hot dog one day!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

* Going through my image archive, I found a picture I made during prototyping for my old 'Havin
g
Faith in Virtuality' article from September 2010. It's of an old WoW character of mine with a section
of biblical phrases about the wearing of armour and weapons applied to it. It's amazing the things
you find in your digital drawers! Having said that,
the 'pants of truth' might have been a
modernization of the original Greek translation!

FRONT PAGE NEWS

Hi everyone!

While browsing through my image research archive this week, I came across a picture of an old
videogame console utility cartridge called the Action
Replay (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Action_Replay ).

These, and cartridges like them, had a button that you could push to freeze a game and then either
use the cartridge's ASIC hardware to generate a cheat mode by altering the code or input a pre
-
made

cheat from a magazine or code
-
book (the early cartridges were released in the years before
the World Wide Web became available).

This made me think about how such rule
-
breaking could be applied to real life instead of virtual life.
Sam has written exten
sively

for example, in the article 'I'mPhone: Taking Hardware Out of the
Equation' ( http://bit.ly/oa3ADI ) and the Ideas Archive entry 'Student Director' ( http://bit.ly/KprxPG
)
-

about how one can use mental and physical choreography to take control o
f the world around
them at will as though they had pressed an activation button.

We are all hard
-
wired from birth with the algorithms to overcome the limitations of the rules of
reality that are instilled into us by adults as children at any time that we
choose to, so long as we
believe completely that the Universe is not as rigid in its operation as we are typically led to believe
by human society.

Once we recognize that our mind can be a living cheat button then we can press it at any time to
change our

perceptions of our environment. This is similar to a technology called 'phasing' that is
now used in massively multiplayer online games such as 'World of Warcraft' and 'Guild Wars 2',
where the world adapts to your individual actions and provides you wit
h features that are invisible
to others who are not on the same phase as you (for instance, player
-
tailored store vendor avatars
in a city).

And whilst the changes that we make will, for the most part, only be visible to ourselves unless you
take an actio
n that alters the environment in a way that is tangible to observers

such as the air
-
disturbance side
-
effects from a release of dormant inner potential, as described in the article
'Measuring Potential' ( http://bit.ly/nrg4ij ).

Once you become capable
at taking control of the world then you can help others to do the same
and so gradually turn a small ripple of influence into a global movement, as detailed in last week's
newsletter editorial ( http://bit.ly/JdTqPo ). Because some rules are meant to be b
roken!

Most of the time I go for the latter option, but always look forward to when I can start a new sheet!

FRONT PAGE NEWS

Hi everyone!

In a March edition of the newsletter, we featured a diagram of the 'Whole School' principle from
Sambiglyon's 'Living & Learning' self
-
enhancement training program as the front
-
pa
ge header
image of that edition (see the link below).

http://bit.ly/Juzgj2

Coming back to that image this week in order to consider how it could be further developed, we
realized that it is an excellent example of a principle that we call the 'Magnet Cor
e of Influence'.

To recap: the idea behind the Magnet Core is that rather than going here, there and everywhere in
order to influence people into the kind of change you would like to see, you instead imagine
yourself to be the center
-
point of the world,

with two
-
way lines that connect to all other people and
places and lead directly back to you.

By amplifying the strength of your influence so that it powerfully ripples outwards from that central
point
-

like a heavy stone dropped in a deep puddle
-

yo
u can direct change from a single location
instead of moving around to multiple locations and creating small ripples that only have a highly
localized reach.

Let's update the Whole School diagram to reflect this transmission of influence to the outer circ
le of
people and places surrounding you:

http://bit.ly/LIkeGy

When you look at your potential to influence in terms of your reach instead of a plain line on a
spider chart, it becomes much easier to instil a belief in yourself that you can achieve more t
han
you have up until now in regard to interaction with those within your organization and outside of it.

It has long been recognized that a leading method of transmitting influence is to master your body
language and projection of confidence. Combine th
at with a video camera and you can produce
awesomely compelling web podcasts that are so attention
-
holding that the speaker could be
reading from the telephone directory and they still seem like the greatest orator ever seen.

Sambiglyon's forthcoming Andr
oid edutainment app 'Lannel Pharaoh'
-

the development of which is
being chronicled in our website's App Dev Diary ( http://bit.ly/IQE54l )
-

and our also
-
forthcoming
'Living & Learning' sub
-
site, will offer training guidance to those who want to become th
e best
Magnet Core Influencer that they can possibly be in their life and chosen career field.

Until then, check out everything else that we have for you in this week's newsletter ...

THIS WEEK'S FLEET GOLDENBERG 'DEVELOPER DIARY' HIGHLIGHTS ON FACEBOOK

* I wanted to find new resources about Japan for my image research archive and realized that my
searches for keywords like 'japan high school library' were only going to find s
ites that were written
in English. So I used Google Translate to convert my search terms into Japanese and pasted
them into Google Images. It was very effective!

You can also get a different range of search results by pasting into a country
-
specific Go
ogle such
Japan's Google.co.jp. This method could probably be used for finding resources posted online by
individuals in any country on Earth which has the internet
-

resources you would not otherwise find
if searching in English.

-----------------------
----------------------------------------------------

* On June 15, Second Life rental price rate increases will come into effect for leasing customers
who joined us prior to January 2012. All customers who became tenants after that date are already
on t
he 2012 price rate and will not see a further increase. The new rates were introduced in
January but delayed for a 6 month period for existing rent
-
box tenants in order to help them to
prepare for the change.

The rise is modest
-

for example, a L$810 a w
eek property becomes L$860
-

but we realize that
any increase is undesirable in this economic climate. Those existing box
-
based customers can
delay the effects of the rise by pre
-
loading advance time credit onto their box at the 2011 price rate
before June

15.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

* Community PlanIt' is "an online community engagement game that gives everyone the power to
shape their community's future":

http://bit.ly/Iuz41N

---------------------
------------------------------------------------------

* The beta version of the new 'Secret of Healey Nab' animated digital novel has been completed.
We'll be putting it through in
-
house beta testing and quality assurance in the coming week and
puttin
g further polish on it based on the beta outcomes. We will then be releasing the book for a
special introductory price of $4.99 / £2.99 GBP. There will also be a free downloadable trial
version of the first half of the book!

Even before final polish is
added, it's a project that we're really proud of, especially considering it's
our first work in Ren'Py. It sets a great technical and quality benchmark for our next work with this
great engine. Check out a preview picture from the almost finished book at

the link below:

http://bit.ly/MbEDXa

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

* I'm sure that sometimes your music chooses you rather than you choosing it. I was intensely
focused on working on debugging some new w
eb
-
page code when I realized that I had the 'Gotta
Catch 'Em All' Pokerap on loop as my background noise to help me concentrate:

http://bit.ly/yyEb9

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

* If you are in need of a

logo or a piece of graphic design commission work, we can
wholeheartedly recommend Seth, the husband of the hugely talented Amanda Da Hamster (who
designed the image of our Sam the Big Lion mascot on the front page of the Sam website). You
can view Seth'
s portfolio at his DA gallery:

http://bit.ly/Jh4J7r

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

* Sambiglyon co
-
owner Giro has created a Google Docs survey about the ease of use of the
Sambiglyon website as part of the

degree qualification he is studying. It would be great for him
and for Sam if you could take ten minutes to complete the survey, which we have embedded on
our website. Thank you!

http://bit.ly/KYS35y

--------------------------------------------------
-------------------------

* One of our big focuses this past week has been on further work to enhance the usability of the
Sam website. We have programmed all the links on the site to open into a new browser window
(ending once and for all the old unce
rtainty about whether a link would open in the current window
or a new one) and all articles on the site have had their headings restyled (large font for headings
and medium for sub
-
headings) so that titles are now highly distinctive from the captions at t
he base
of images.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

* The alpha web client of the easy to use Massively Multiplayer Online game creator 'Storybricks'
has now become publicly available:

http://bit.ly/JBiyPW

-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

*

"Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) announce edX, a
transformational new partnership in online education. Through edX, the two institution
s will
collaborate to enhance campus
-
based teaching and learning and build a global community of
online learners."

http://www.edxonline.org

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

* Programming animated movements ca
n be terribly dull but it also has its funny moments as you
watch the prototype animation sequence glitching out. I was trying to create what should be a
simple 'jump up and down on the spot' motion for the 'Secret of Healey Nab' digital story
-
book. So
f
ar the co
-
main character Larch's little sister Willow has run round and round like she's full of sugar
and flown across the room like the Hulk. I just lost it with laughter when she Super Mario head
-
stomped her brother though!

Update: I managed to correc
t Willow's sugar
-
rush superpowers and she now bounces angrily like a
normal little sister. I guess in videogame terminology, they would call this a 'nerf'.

APP DEV DIARY

* Another strong focus recently has been a tota
l refurbishment of all the episodes of the App Dev
Diary feature on the Sam site (including re
-
making explanations so that they are clearer, correcting
errors, making headings and sub
-
headings in the episodes larger so they are distinctive from
image capti
ons and placing borders around images that lacked them in order to make them much
more readable).

The image border issue originally came about due to the need to show as much detail as possible
within the confines of the screen width available on the Sa
m site, but during the refurbishment we
found a technique for adding those borders without losing detail

We also found that the URL for episode 5, 'Designing the Play Environment', had been mislabeled.
Oops! We've fixed it now, but if you missed the epi
sode the first time round then you can check it
out here:

onwards!

FRONT PAGE NEWS

Hi everyone!

There is an odd relationship between the advancement of one's personal capability and other
peoples' perceptions of that harnessed talent. Becoming better at something is either seen as
something to e strongly encou
raged or something to be intensely jealous or resentful of

there
does not seem to be any middle
-
point between those extremes.

The subject of unlocking latent capability is one that Sambiglyon has written extensively about in
the past

especially regard
ing our articles on the 'Challenge Force' technique

and we will be
returning anew to it in our in
-
development Android mobile app 'Lannel Pharaoh' and subsequent
'Lannel Pharaoh' media.

If demonstrations of above
-
average ability can trigger negative reac
tions in some, I have always
wondered how individuals who tend towards that kind of emotion would react if a person had a
simple 'on button' that enabled them to release and tangibly manifest a superhuman level of
potential instantly at will. Fear? Terro
r? Mob violence? If a person had the ability to fire laser
beams from their hands then some would find it easy to transfer their viewpoints onto that figure
and quickly judge them to be a possible terrorist rather than a possible hero.

It is a theme tha
t has been explored since the Sixties in comic book series such as the X
-
Men
(particularly in regard to the hypocrisy of the X
-
Men being hated and feared by 'normal' humans as
a “race” because their powers are based on the mutated genes they were born with
, whilst those
who gain their super
-
powers through accident, magic etc are adored as champions of justice).

Over the years I have mused on numerous occasions about which method of visibly benchmarking
the upper ceiling of my own potential (if there is a

limit that is reachable) would be the least
frightening . Much of those musings were incorporated into an article on the Sam website titled
'Measuring Potential'.

In a sense, the measuring of released potential is a scientific approach: just like in s
pace science
or quantum physics, you are trying to detect something that may not be detectable by the naked
eye and so you try to prove its existence by looking for indicators of things that might be being
affected by that intangible force.

An example of
this is predicting the presence of a planet or a black hole in a distant solar system
by observing the observing the orbital paths of other stellar bodies in that region of space). The
energies associated with unlocked potential can, likewise, alter the a
ir pressures directly
surrounding that person's body and generate an air disturbance that is measurable with a
barometer. Another symptom of release is the gradual static
-
like rising on
-
end of the hair as it is
stimulated by the near
-
skin energy currents,

like a slow
-
motion Super Saiyan transformation.

In answer to the earlier question I posed about the best way to demonstrate above
-
average
capability without causing a panicked sell
-
out of pitchforks at hardware stores: just as thought is
wasted unless i
t is subsequently converted into action, harnessing potential is a waste if you do not
do anything with it once you have control over it.

So rather than making a YouTube video of your hair rising into into anime
-
style points and causing
your t
-
shirt to
ripple with a self
-
generated air disturbance, it is far better to channel your personal
power resources into creating something amazing!. Because if you make the creation the focus of
attention rather than the creator, there is nothing that you cannot ach
ieve in this world. Anybody
can claim to be able to do something great. It is the actual doing that determines the kind of
impact that you will leave ...

THIS WEEK'S FLEET GOL
DENBERG 'DEVELOPER DIARY' HIGHLIGHTS ON FACEBOOK

* We've at last overcome the problems we were having with Android app button programming that
caused the App Dev Diary feature to go on hiatus for a while! We'll now start planning how to re
-
introduce the

Diary and resume production on our 'Lannel Pharaoh' app.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

* I can still surprise myself by how much I can be affected by technological scenes in Star Trek,
like a saucer separa
tion. Part of me hopes that one day I can get my old starship propulsion
research back on track. I got an A for my final year paper on it at university after converting the
design into one for a faster than light fiber
-
optic computer network, as I figure
d that while it wasn't
as interesting as submitting a warp drive as your final project, it would be easier for the professor to
understand and grade!

Maybe it's too late for me to go down that path professionally now, even with my engineering
degree. Whi
le in theory I believe it's never too late for anything, in practice in professional and
academia circles, if you don't build up a reputation in that field of work then nobody is going to take
any interest in what you have to say, and that can be kinda sou
l
-
crushing unless you have absolute
determination to prove them wrong.

For instance, I filed a patent application for the unique component of the engine design that made it
new and distinctive and the patent office turned it down despite my explanation
of its principles,
stating flatly that “Faster than light is not possible”. I seem to make a difference to people in the
work that I do now, and I'm happy about that. Anyway, saucer!

* The rightmost side of my computer's desktop is cluttered with shortcut icons to programs I don't
use (such as Blender and Microsoft Visual Studio) but hope to learn how to one day. The neat
-
freak in m
e is irritated by them, but deleting them would be like giving up on a goal!

FRONT PAGE NEWS

Hi everyone!

Given that we have frequently been discussing the subject of disability in education

both in fiction
and the real world

on our Facebook 'd
ev blog' recently, it seemed natural to tie up all those
individual threads into a special focus on the subject in the newsletter this week.

It is not a topic that is new to Sambiglyon, as we have carried out a large amount of R&D during
the past few ye
ars on how to enhance the personal and educational life of disabled people as part
of content development for our 'Living & Learning' program (the fruits of which should hopefully
emerge publicly in the second half of this year).

What has particularly c
hanged Sam's thinking recently, through activities such as the speech we
delivered at the Virtual Ability non
-
profit organization in Second Life and the reading of the free
interactive visual novel 'Katawa Shoujo' (available for Windows, Mac and Linux), is

how

as able
-
bodied people

we relate on a personal, emotional level to those that we seek to serve

not just
the disabled person but also their teachers, workers and carers.

This personal connection was perhaps a missing
-
link in our research: while w
e had an
understanding of the mechanics of disability and assistive technologies, we have never claimed to
truly
-
understand
-

what it is like to be disabled, and nor will we do so in future. That would be a
ridiculous, patronizing assertion.

Instead, w
e have always taken the approach of developing tools and methods that we hoped
would address the mechanics of disability, and in doing so empower people to help themselves to
a greater extent and so gain greater confidence, independence and happiness.

'Katawa Shoujo' was transformative to Sam's thought processes about a range of disabilities and
how they affect that person's education and personal
-
emotional life. If you disregard the risque
parts (which are optional self
-
contained narratives that can

be switched off completely in the main
menu anyway without particularly affecting the story) then it can be used as an extremely powerful
visual training guide for those who either work with disabled people already or would like to enter
that field.

Othe
r features of the book include the ability to view a gallery of its images, music and video
outside of the story once they have been unlocked and jump to any point of the story that has
already been passed through by the reader, meaning that it is possible

to design training and
lesson plans around its content. An instructor could, for example, play through the entire book to
unlock everything (or downloaded a completed save
-
file from the internet) and then save and
provide their students with the save so
that they can access the materials at any time.

If a measure of the effectiveness of a story is what you do with the impressions it leaves once you
walk away from the page, then the fact that we googled about learning sign language (amongst
other themes f
rom the novel) demonstrates that our future assistive content is likely to be shaped
in no small part by our experiences with this great book! We absolutely recommend that you give
'Katawa Shoujo' a try as well

we think you will be surprised by how much

it affects you ...

THIS WEEK'S FLEET GOLDENBERG 'DEVELOPER DIARY' HIGHLIGHTS ON FACEBOOK

*

The Ideas Archive design refit is complete after a solid week of reprogramming work! The
enhancements are numerous and will be listed in full on an imminent update of the Archive hub
-
page. Primary among them is expansion to support the addition of new
types of high quality media
within Archive items, greater text readability, more attractive presentation and direct links to
relevant Sam content outside of the archive as well as the usual in
-
archive further reading
suggestions.

Entries can now be up t
o 15 steps long (and easily expandable beyond that in future if necessary)
in order to accommodate the future expansion of Archive entries into new types of media such as
images, blueprints, 3D models, video clips and others. Check out an example page fro
m the new
system at the link below:

Also, an illustrated guide to the new interface has now been added to the Archive's hub page:

* In the supermarket the store security guard bounded up to me and enthusiastically greeted me
and enquired about my life. I guessed he must have known me at high school but I couldn't place
the face at all and tried no
t to let it show. It was like that at university

everyone seemed to know
me and waved and called, but I couldn't recognize most of them.

I was pleased that they liked me but at the same time was somewhat bemused by it. Still, it was
beneficial in the

sense that after that, I became somewhat immune to being affected by praise,
while still always really appreciating when someone takes the trouble to give it. Without that
flattery burn

out in uni, I could have ended up like the elitist pony Rarity:
