Establishing a power monitoring capability in a data center requires building a separate infrastructure of IP-based intelligent
power distribution units. Optimizing power consumption by monitoring, managing and reporting manually is tiresome. In
addition, providing a simple solution to these challenges requires the capability to obtain an integrated view of the server pool.
Lenovo ThinkServer Smart Grid Technology (based on Intel® Data Center Manager) off ers this Smart Grid solution for data
centers with a standalone web-based power management console. The console provides great visibility and the capability to
manage up to a thousand nodes.
Smart Grid allows you to understand and manage power consumption effi ciently with negligible impact to server performance
and responsiveness. Intelligent group power policy streamlines the process to discover optimum power settings and allows you
to schedule policies including power capping, by time of day and/or day of week.
Using this smart technology improves power saving, business continuity and capacity planning. Projected power savings

include 25% savings for database applications, 15% to 20% savings for web applications and more than 10% savings for
most of the other applications. Capacity planning assisted by Smart Grid allows you to determine true power consumption
and increase rack density

by 30%. Real-time monitoring with power budget enforcement increases rack loading by 60% as
compared to the traditional method. Increase server count per rack and save more Watts per server using Smart Grid.
