Association of Professional Technical Employees (APTE)

June 2, 2008

Susan M. Thomason, Presi dent

Esteemed Board members,
Chairperson McRaven,
and Dr. Kinslow.

The Association of Professional
-
Technical Employees would like to support the
resolutions and recommendations made by the Full
-
Time Faculty Senate, the Adjunct Faculty
Association and the Classified Employee Association.

The APTE conducted on online poll

from May 16

28 on the cost of living adjustments
to be offered by the College.
We had a
35%
return rate on the survey and 58
%
of respondents
felt that a 6% increase was fair and equitable given the current
economic conditions in Austin
,
regionally and
nationally
. According to a worldwide
salary
study conducted by Mercer

this
year
, “salaries are expected to rise by an average of 6% in 2008

1.9% above inflation.”
Projected pay increases in North America average 3.7% with an additional 1.9% projected pa
y
above inflation for a total of 5.6%. Based on this data and the need to continuously attract and
retain a quality workforce, providing a cost
-
of
-
living adjustment in the range between 5.
6

and
6.0% wi
ll help faculty stay at the top
levels of their pay
sc
ales statewide, and help exempt and
non
-
exempt employees meet the top levels of theirs.

Another avenue

explored by APTE was the provision of an across
-
the
-
board, one
-
time
disbursement

or stipend
that helps employees address the current economic conditions in
Austin, especially the expenditure categories of Transportation
,

which has risen by 8.2%
,

and
Energy, which has risen by a
significant 17%.

While the APTE is thankful the College has a Board policy
and Administrative Rule
that
address compensation and has worked to keep our salaries and benefits competitive, we
welcome the opportunity to ha
ve a voice in this discussion and share the views of professional
-
technical employees.

Thank you

for considering our recommendations and your continued support of the
nearly 3000 Classified, Professional
-
Technical and Faculty employees of the College.
