Identification of

Bacteria Using

Molecular Techniques

25
-
28 November 2008

Introduction

Bacteria

are

microorganisms

which

are

found

ubiquitously

in

food,

soil

and

water

environments
.

They

can

either

be

beneficial

or

harmful

to

these

various

ecosystems,

or

they

may

have

no

impact

at

all
.

The

use

of

various

types

of

bacteria

in

biotechnology

demands

for

their

rapid

and

accurate

identification
.

Therefore,

this

workshop

is

aimed

to

provide

hands
-
on

training

on

molecular

techniques

for

bacterial

identification
.

Objectives

To

provide

participants

with

the

knowledge

in

nucleic

acid
-

and

protein
-
based

techniques

for

the

identification

of

bacteria
.

To

provide

a

hands
-
on

experience

in

the

identification

of

bacteria

using

polymerase

chain

reaction

(PCR),

RFLP

and

automated

DNA

sequencing
.

Participants

Members

of

the

scientific

community

who

are

interested

to

learn

and

gain

experience

in

bacterial

identifications

through

molecular

techniques
.
