which will develop the students’ understanding of AS & A2

Genetic Engineering

In this course students will work alongside industrial scientists to
carry out a mini research project in an industrial standard state
of the art laboratory.

Studen
ts will work in teams to identify a bacterial clone able to
produce human insulin for diabetic patients. They will design an
experiment which can be used to identify the correct clone and
then test their hypothesis practically. Students will need to
develo
p skills in working accurately by using
Gilson
micropipettes
to carry out restriction

enzyme

mapping
of plasmid DNA
and
a
steady hand for
an
alysis by Gel E
lectrophoresis !

Each team will represent a small Biotechnology Research Team
keen to find a solution

for diabetic patients. There will be an
element of competition between the teams but also the
importance of collaboration between teams

to achieve the
ultimate goal.

The course will conclude with each team reporting their findings
to the group and a scie
ntific discussion of the results and
implications for the scientists and the patients.

We are able to offer some flexibility around start and finish times, but course duration is
usually fixed at 6 hours.

Prices

The cost to schools is £228 (£19/student based on 12 attendees).

Transport to the centre is the responsibility of
the attending group. Students should bring a
packed lunch. Facilities are provided for hot and cold drinks, for a nominal charge.
