Specific IT roles

Opportunities in software development

Software development is a very broad area
which includes many different job roles.

When developing a new software system, there
are a number of stages involved and these are
reflected in the different job roles that exist at
each stage.

Investigation and Design

The investigation and design stage of software development is
completed at the beginning of the process.

Requirements are gathered from the users, from the business and
the development team.

In each area, similar questions are asked:

-

What are the goals?

-

What are the
constraints
?

-

What are the current tools or processes in place?

Systems Analyst

S
omeone who uses their knowledge of software development
and the application area involved to identify what the software will
need to do.

The systems analyst also
investigates

how a system currently
works and what benefits the new system is likely to bring.

He may also investigate what the hardware requirements are.

Systems Analyst

what skills are needed?

Since the job is quite complex, years of work experience in software
development are necessary before taking on this role.

G
ood understanding of the business area the software is being
developed for.

For example, if the software is developed for a banking system, the
systems analyst must have a sound understanding of banking.

System Designer / Architect

what skills are needed?

Similar to the systems analyst role, a system designer will probably
have many years’ experience as a programmer.

They also need an excellent understanding of software design
techniques.

Project Manager

Since there will be a lot of staff
working on a large software
development project, a project
manager is usually appointed to run
the overall project.

It is his/her responsibility to ensure
that everyone knows what they are
doing, that
deadlines

are adhered
to and that the project runs
smoothly.

Project Manager

what skills are needed?

Prior experience
of working on an IT project.

Good understanding of the tasks involved in an IT project and their
duration.

Good at dealing with people, capable of
delegating
,
negotiating
and
compromising

(when necessary).

Well organised and efficient.

Web Designer

May or may not be a computer programmer, but
must have some programming skills.

Determines how a webpage will appear on the
Internet.

Also implements own designs through
programming.

A web designer is mainly involved in the
creative
design
of web pages based on
client requests
.

Web Designer

what skills are needed?

Basic programming skills are still essential for web design.

Excellent
working knowledge
of
graphics software
like
Photoshop or programs like Javascript (to animate graphics).

Experience working with
multimedia

programs to add sound or
film clips to webpages.

Creativity, originality and an
eye for detail
are a must.

Ability to
translate

customer needs into a final specific design
with eye grabbing details.

Emerging IT roles

Emerging technologies, emerging jobs

As seen in Unit 1: Communicating in the IT Industry,
IT is a rapidly expanding field that has penetrated as
well as generated other sectors, such as the digital
game industry, artificial intelligence and robotics,
igaming, smart mobile telephony, the social media
and others.

Perhaps the most important field of development and
the one that IT plays a major role in is the creation of
intelligent systems that are able to mimic human
behaviour as well as operate independently of human
thought, action or activity.

When one speaks of computers and technology in the
21
st

century one must necessarily mention artificial
intelligence.

IT careers related to Artificial Intelligence

Search Engineer

Search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing and others rely on good AI
systems for search optimisation. The director of research in Google happens to be an AI
scientist.

Robotics Systems Engineer

Robots used in manufacturing, the military, entertainment
and space exploration are being developed using a high level of AI programming.

NLP Architect/Scientist

NLP stands for Natural Language Processing. This is an
extremely wide area serving search engines, intelligent marketing, translation/interpreting
and computational linguistics.

ASRU Speech Architect/Engineer

Automated Speech Recognition & Understanding is
related to NLP. The AI engineer’s task here is to make the computer understand people’s
speech.

Image Processing & Computer Vision Engineer

The AI engineer’s task here is to
make the computer understand information from images and videos.

IT and Digital Gaming

The digital game industry is fast outgrowing the film industry in its sales of consoles and game products.

It offers multiple opportunities for specialists in the software development cycle however it has created new
roles in the following fields:

Concept/Storyboard Artists

these artists flesh out the game with sketches and paintings of characters,
levels, vehicles and other elements in the game.

Character Artists & Animators

artists who work with 3D programs such as Maya or 3DS Max to
produce realistic renderings of moving characters and objects.

Level Desig
ners

create the game environments for player interaction. These people will have a huge
impact on determining whether the game will have the look and feel projected by the entire design team.

Texture Artists

apply skins to levels and characters, ensuring that textures are seamlessly mapped onto
3D objects and backgrounds.

Sound/Audio Engineers

responsible for sound effects and related game music.

Professional Play Testers

people who put long hours into testing the game’s
beta
-
version
to locate
bugs and potential problems.

IT and iGaming

iGaming involves interactive online gaming, gambling and betting. Jobs in this
popular sector involve specialised IT people providing software solutions to
clients involved in online casino, poker, book making, betting, bingo, odds
compilation, sports trading , lotteries and payment.

Various job roles include:

Betting Portal Manager

Online Marketing Director

Payments Solutions Manager

Graphics Programmer

Online Gaming Designer

Customer Care Manager

Network Administrator

Software Licensing

Gaming Lawyer

Mobile Phone Technology

Mobile is the biggest changing factor changing IT right now. Building mobile
apps
, building mobile strategies and securing those devices are the industry’s
top concern today.

In response to the flood of new mobile devices and emergent
smartphone

technology, companies are desperately seeking
mobile technology experts
to:

Evaluate mobile platforms for enterprise use

Research and draft device specifications

Support users and developers

Provide layered security for data encryption

Social Media

Social web tools and services are now entering business at every level. As the
complexity of social business grows, companies need specialists to make it all
work.

Apart from the typical IT design roles required for the creation of social media
platforms and applications, the developing world of social media and business
also involves:

Social Media Strategists

Social Media Managers

Social Media Architects
