The ABB Mobile Devices Project



A project which has been running in
parallell with the
WiseTech
project
headed by Pierre Öberg, ABB



The idea was to influence and push
the thinking in WiseTech further

Taking a step beyond mobile devices is partly about realizing
the limitations of today’s mobile information technology



While mobile devices eases and supports many

kinds of tasks and activities that stationary computers

don’t, what are they
not

good at?



Small screens and hand

held use make mobile

devices such as PDAs and mobile phones very

individual to their character



Obtrusive and small input devices limit the

amount of user input one can ask from the user

ABB Mobile Devices project’s basic problem has been to explore the
boundaries of these limitations with mobile devices, and what can be
done to ease them



Is there a way in which we can get

the best of two worlds?



Can we allow people to be mobile,

yet have the opportunity to get together


and talk or discuss in front of a large s

creen and enter text unobtrusively?

environment of use

The Scope and Aim of This Project



To develop a prototype system of such


an
Integrated Digital Environment



Taking off from some of the limitations of today’s mobile devices:



Small screens


Makes viewing of large pictures, maps, and blueprints practically
infeasible


Is not a social thing, you don’t gather around a PDA



Troublesome text input


Writing large amounts of text is difficult


Research into speech recognition is being done, but in reality it’s far
ahead

The HOTSPOT concept



These problems could be eased in a factory

environment by the introduction of
hotspots


at strategic locations throughout the factory



When people enter into a hotspot, they could…



have the choice of transferring their

’sessions’ to a wall
-
sized display



Use a traditional keyboard which

automatically connects to their PDAs



Discuss issues with remote workers or

managers through video

Prototype of an INTEGRATED DIGITAL ENVIRONMENT



The prototype that we have developed

as a part of visualizing the integrated

digital environment concept gives mobile

users access to such a hotspot area



WLAN positioning systems are used to

find out if someone is inside a hotspot area



The system recognizes that someone is in

the hotspot and gives them the opportunity

to use the large display for various tasks



The large screen and the mobile device interacts

with each other and with the user
