Following the first questionnaire on the state of art on

Materials technologies in the higher
education institu
tions in the Mediterranean area”,

the
Aerospace Techn
ology District (DTA)

and the

Technical Unit of Materials Technologies

(
UTTMATB
)

of ENEA

both

located in Brindisi
(Italy)

, with which UNIMED collaborates, are

interested in further develop and analyze this sector.
Therefore a second questionnair
e has been

defined in order to
better identify technologies and
advanced diagnostics with high
synergy

capacity in the transport se
ctor in the 5 countries of the
S
outhern Mediterranean

basin

taken as case
-
study (
Algeria, Morocco, Egypt, Palestine,
Turkey).


Briefly,

UNIMED has
been charged by the Aerospace Technology District
(DTA) of Brindisi to carry
out

a study and research activity in the field of Materials Technologies in the Mediterranean basin.
This study is placed within the cooperation framework that the DTA

has already undertaken with
the Technical Unit of Materials Technologies (UTTMATB) of ENEA
-

Italian National Agency for
New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development in Brindisi


whose aim is to
conduct research studies related to mater
ials technology and status of the art of laboratory on
materials technologies in the Mediterranean region.


The
UTTMATB aims
indeed
to develop knowledge in the areas of energy and sustainable
economic development through research, development and engineeri
ng in the field of metals,
polymers and ceramics for structural and functional applications. The unit stands as main objective
the study of such materials both in a massive form that under the form of thin layers, or coatings, or
nanomaterial, in order to
minimize the energy contents and the environmental impact in the early
stages of implementation, use and disposal and, more in general, in order to improve its
performance.



The expected result
of this new
second
inquire
is a report that, in each country,

could detect the
potential
synergy

of technologies and advanced diagnostics in the field

inquired
,

and

consequently,
the economic potential of
public investment in the sector,
the presence or absence of other
international competitors, the presence of pri
vate sector investment a
t
national or international
level.

Moreover,
the questionnaire seeks

to explore possible collaborations with universities and/or
professional technical
institutions

in order to create a system of international rela
tions to support a

strategy of synergy

in the countries under investigation.

New technologies and processes to create nano
-
structured coatings and/or surface
treatments, through physical or chemical techniques. These coatings and treatments allow
for the production of high performance components and products, as they enhance
fun
ctional properties (of relevance in different fields of applications), such as: selective
optical absorption; thermoelectric and electrochromic efficiency; sensitivity to gas; high
hardness, resistance to corrosion, low friction, wear resistance; thermal b
arrier; barrier to
gases diffusion (especially hydrogen perm
-
selectivity).




Innovative synthesis processes with low environmental impact, in order to develop
composite polymer materials, including nanocomposites and natural fiber reinforced
polymer composite structures.




Fabrication and characterization of innovative nanomate
rials and
Nanocomposite

materials
by using chemical synthesis and/or electrosynthesis methods (processes suitable for scale
up) with particular attention with respect to energy conversion (e.g., photovoltaics,
electroluminescence) and storage related issue
s (i.e., supercapacitors, etc.) .






Technologies for the realization and functional testing of solid state chemical sensors based
on nano
-
materials, and methods for managing sensor networks (wireless technologies),
with particular attention to environmental applications (for example: air
(and water) quality,
pollution, etc.).




3D computed reconstruction of tomographic images using commodity graphics hardware and
evaluation algorithms to allow determination and visualization of relevant material properties
and characterization of defects
and damage.




Macroscopic characterization methodologies in order to test the thermal, mechanical,
functional and optical properties of innovative materials for applications in transport, energy,
packaging technologies, and sustainable housing.




Non
-

structive probe and characterization of materials and components by using ultrasound
waves, infrared radiation, and X
-
rays.

Chemical analysis and microanalysis methodologies, based on the techniques of X
-
ray

spectrometry, secondary ion mass spectrometr
y and various techn
iques of electron
spectroscopy.



Image acquisition and image analysis (morphology and structure) based on the techniques of
electron microscopy and ion microscopy, scanning force (stylus
) microscopy, X
-
ray
tomography.



Structural anal
ysis by X
-
rays, electrons and ions, based on the techniques of X
-
ray scattering
at small angle, X
-
ray diffraction of powders, thin films, surfaces, and electron diffraction in
transmission.
