Neural Network Analysis of Gait Biomechanical Data for
Classification of Knee OA

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease, which causes the degradation of articular
cartilage and subchondral

bone. The disease may result in mechanical abnormalities of the
joints, including weight bearing joints such as the knees and hips. In this work, we analyze
gait biomechanical data using neural network models to predict the level of joint
deterioration an
d the level of pain in participants suffering from knee OA. The results of the
analyses demonstrate strong correlation between gait kinetics and joint deterioration and
level of pain in osteoarthritic individuals.

Biographical Sketch:

Xiaopeng Zhao rece
ived BS and MS degrees both in engineering mechanics from
Tsinghua University, Beijing Chain. He received Ph.D. degree from the Engineering Science
and Mechanics Department at Virginia Tech, in 2004. After one year of postdoc at Virginia
Tech, he joined th
e Department of Biomedical Engineering at Duke University of as a
postdoctoral researcher in 2005. He joined the faculty of Department of Mechanical,
Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering in the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, in 2007.
His research int
erests include computational biology, biomedical signal processing,
infectious disease modeling, biomechanics, nonlinear dynamics, control, MEMS, and AFM.
